B.C. Wildlife Federation Announces Three Linked Workshops
on Thompson River Steelhead POPULATION Recovery

Burnaby, January 17-06 - Because of habitat loss, poor ocean survival and reduced access to clean water, there has been a steep decline in the Thompson River Steelhead population. Working with the Living Rivers Trust Fund through the Ministry of Environment, the BC Wildlife Federation, in partnership with Pacific Salmon Foundation, is leading a series of public consultations.

The Federation has been recruited to coordinate and facilitate three linked multi-stakeholder workshops that will focus on understanding stock assessment, habitat protection, and increasing adult returns. Pacific Salmon Foundation will provide their professional project management and funding delivery of this Living Rivers initiative.

Workshop I - Understanding Stock Assessment
Saturday, February 11, 2006 from 9:00 a.m. till 1:00 p.m.

Radisson Hotel and Conference Centre, 8181 Cambie Road, Richmond, BC

Workshop II  - Rebuilding Adult Returns
Saturday  February 11, 2006 from 1:00 p.m. till 4:30 p.m.

Workshop III - Habitat Protection
Saturday March 4,  2006 from 8:30 a.m. till 4:30 p.m.

For full information about the workshops and registration please contact the BC Wildlife Federation at www.bcwf.bc.ca or contact Christopher Bos at (250) 652-4141 or by email at governor@shaw.ca

The "Path to Recovery" workshops focus on building greater awareness of the importance and complexity of the challenges around Thompson River Steelhead sustainability as well as seeking stakeholder participation in determining solutions. On completion of all three workshops, a final multi-stakeholder response based report of the consultation and recommendations will be presented to the BC Minister of Environment and the Minister of Fisheries of Oceans Canada with a view to implementing a comprehensive sustainability plan.

"British Columbia's Thompson River Steelhead are a highly respected game fish that are world renowned for their larger size and amazing fighting capabilities" said BC Wildlife Federation president Dave White, who went on to say "We collectively need to conserve and rebuild their numbers to ensure these magnificent fish are here for us today and for our children in the future.  It is time to take action."

The provincial government, who manage Thompson River Steelhead, are working through the Ministry of Environment and the Living Rivers Trust to implement initiatives that proactively address Thompson River Steelhead sustainability. The BC Wildlife Federation is pleased to play a role in this multi-stakeholder solution.

The BC Wildlife Federation has 30,000 members and is a province-wide voluntary conservation organization representing British Columbians whose aims are to protect, enhance and promote the wise use of the environment for the benefits of present and future generations.
