If you are getting a new outfit I would reccomend getting a level wind. Spinners are great for tossing spinners and spoons but if you want to maximize your drfit go with a level wind or later on a pin.

Don't buy a cheapy level wind from Walmart and Canadian Tires. All it will result in is frustration for you from birdsnests. Instead I would reccomend going to your local tackle retailer and paying more for a better product. I reccomend a 10-10.5 foot rod. There are several models availiable for fairly cheap ~$100. The consenus around here seems to be between, the trophy XL, convergence and the berkley. I personally reccomend the berkley but I do not own a trophy XL so my experience with it is rather limited. For reels there are several options again, shimano, abu garcia and quantum all have good models for relativley cheap, although the standard around here seems to be the abu garcia c3 6500. ****Heres a good money saver**** go across the border to pick one of these reels up. I personally got mine for $90 cdn.

When I was killing time at Army and Navy in downtown Vancouver over the weekend, I'm pretty sure I saw the Berkley Canadian Specialist in 10'6" and 11' model on sale for $72.00.

That's a heck of a deal considering I've seen them go for $100 and up. There were lots there but double check before you go.

Those pinks are in nice shape for this time of year.  I was out at Herrling September 26 and everything I caught was fairly dark.

Well done!

i would go with the trophy XL tcs6105 8-17lbs rating great rod for $85 @Hub Sports and if you want a new reel check out Ebay as i just got my Abu5500 c3 for $52 landed price not bad considering their about $149.00 here without tax.I've never had a Berkley but i know their also a good rod and they won't break the bank either.Another good reel to consider if you want to spend a little more are the Shimano reels you can't go wrong with either.

An Abu C3 will set you back about $105 + taxes at Marine West last time I checked.  I have a Canadian Specialist rod, 11'.  It's not a bad rod for the money.  It' s important to buy the best you can afford (keep in mind that we're talking about what YOU can afford).  Otherwise you will "outgrow" it very quickly and not be satisfied with it and then want to buy better equipment.  That will cost you more in the long run.  A C3 combo with the Berkeley will last you a lifetime if you look after it and will make a solid dependable backup combo when you decide to upgrade down the road.  Or you can sell it and expect to recoup about 1/2 of what you paid if it's in good working order.

I believe there is a Abu C4 for sale here on the forum for $80 . even if it is used it stil can be as good as new .
And there right about this sport/hobby becoming expensive , but it doesn't have to be . In my family there are 3 of us that fish regularly , but for some reason we have like 5or 6 rods/reels ea. . Flyfishing , spin casting , level winds , center pins , ultra light gear , back up rods and reels , saltwater gear , it is amazing how much stuff you can acumulate in 20yrs of fishing  .
