What to lookfor when buying a used boat?

Hi,
I'm thinking of buying a 20~26' used boat. What signs would tell me it might be a problem boat?

Engage a Marine Surveyor to inspect the boat. At ~ $ 100.00, it is very inexpensive insurance on a costly purchase. The survey includes EVERYTHING on the boat (hull, engines, mechanics, electronics, trailer if it has one, etc etc). This will be required for insurance purposes anyway, and the bottom line will inform you of approximate current value, and what, if anything, requires attention to bring it up to snuff.

I would NOT purchase any rig 20 feet or over without having this done.

Totally agree on the marine surveyor!! A few years back, I was about to buy a boat (nice little cuddy) for a former employer and just before I closed the deal, I decided on having it surveyed and the surveyor found a problem with the engine that ended up costing the seller another $1000 or so to fix, that I wouldv'e hadda pay if not for the surveyor finding it. One hundred saved a thou. You decide.

Wow that's definitely worth the cost. Would insurance company have surveyer that they can suggest? Wouldn't want to find one that is affiliated with broker.
