Roe on Hook?
« on: September 25, 2005, 03:04:12 PM »

I hear many of you guys are using roe as your preferred bait for coho and some other salmon. I have a question on how you keep the roe on your hook, all iv heard is that you cure the roe in order to keep it on the hook. Does someone know a site or can explain how to cure roe or any other method that works to keep roe on the hook, that would be great. Do you guys think roe sacs and cured roe work about the same when fishing?

Put your hook through the roe and snug it tight with the bait loop

I use Duct tape to hold the roe on the hook but Band aids will do in a pinch.

It's also important that you have a piece of skein with roe that goes through the egg loop otherwise the eggs will just be cut by the line and fall off.  Or, you can also tie roe into sacs.  .

While true, only in certain times at certain places.  Where are you going?  E.G. in the lower Frazer I've never seen roe in the bags for coho, but it works fine for springs.

I that any advice you get here won't help as much as tying up some hooks as said above, cue up some roe really simply and going fishing.  As soon as you get there talk to someone who is fishing.  I find that if you ask honestly (stroking their egos) people will tell you all you need.  A few lines of text here is nothing compaired to watching an experienced angler cinch some roe onto a hook.

Local knowledge is key:  When in Rome, do as the Romans!
