Alaska crab fishing show.
« on: September 12, 2005, 03:10:40 AM »

Anyone wach that show on discovery channel on sunday about the crab fishery in alaska it was pretty amazing the deckhands can make up to 50k in one week of being out on the ocean. Catch is its dangerous as hell every seasson atleast 1 guy dies by falling in the water the bearing sea is a killer. I was thinking i of doing this one day just before at the end of the show when they said they are just gona set an ammount for each boat so its not a gong show to catch the most crab and put your crew and boat at more risk. Intresting show never knew people lost their lives to get that delicous and expensive king crab.

I saw it last night...Crazy....
1-2 people die die for every week the season is open.
Not worth it, in my eyes. My wife and family is more valued than 50k per week..

Have you guys watched another Discovery channel show sometime back? It was about driving supply trucks across frozen lakes in the NW territories.

Those drivers make 1M plus per season (4 months).  But its so dangerous even at that pay tab they're having problem recruiting enough drivers.

I've seen that show. The waves are just plain scary. There's no way I want to be anywhere close to the Bering Sea.

Sorta makes you think, unfortunatly a couple usually die on the Vedder each season and they are there just for recreation.....

where in the NWT?  last time I drove ( 94 ) yellowknife to Lupin  money was good but not that good there is guys driving cat trains further up but money was about the same not very often a truck breaks thru more so a cat or repair crew during the initial opening/prep of the road ,especialy where the ice road converts up onto a portage .

I have a nephew who did two seasons on crab boats, he also has served a total of 3 1/2 years in Afganistan/Iraq he said he would rather be in the forces than on the crab boat
