sockeye open...exactly where on the fraser???
« on: August 31, 2005, 09:52:54 PM »

Yeah, and to think I used to be a geography major when i was at school those quick couple of years.....

I have read the notice.  but am quite confused where on the fraser it is opened.... Confluence of the Sumas River???  In abbotsford area?  Is that where the Mission bridge is?  So I am assuming that includes Pegleg?

Not that it really matters, I ain't gonna get a chance to go ....Flooring guys doing my laminate floors tomorrow, stuff on Friday that needs dealing with, Saturday and Sunday were designated renovation days....wow, the week will go by and I will have maybe 1 chance to snag a fine dinner....no pun intended. lol.

for those who think I may be one of those people that bought a liscence to catch sockeye...WRONG!  I ate enough Bass on that FWR St. Mary's trip in June to have made up for that liscence already!!!

either way, in case I can tear myself away from the renos for one afternoon, could someone enlighten me please.

Why are you starting a new sockeye opening thread like everyone else? :o :P ;D

I am going to look for a map tonight and if I can't find it, I'll request it from DFO tomorrow morning. :)

Thanks!  Ya gotta love the lawyer type language you sometimes get in reports, where you actually gotta use your brain to figure out what they are saying!  Doesn't help that I am on 5 hours of sleep in 2 days, and it had nothing to do with fishing  :(

Yes, it would be nice if the bureaucrats who drafts these notices can write English.

being able to write english should be the bare minimum of these bureaucrats, however it is quite evident that even those standards of intelligence are often not met, when it comes to the DFO!!!

Rod, while your at it talking to dfo, is there still a small piece of the 29-3 or 29-4 salt chuck over by Porlier or Active that is open for Socks, or any local salt? I read the latest opneings & closures a few times but could not figure it out.

Today's notice only applies to non-tidal Fraser River, Mission to Sawmill. If there are no new fishery notices (I haven't seen any), the sockey retention regulations of 29-3 and 29-4 can be found on this DFO tidal reg page.

Quote
Sockeye openings & closures:
The daily limit for Sockeye salmon in Sub-areas 29-1, 29-2 & 29-5 is zero (0) per day effective August 27 until further notice.

Note that there is currently no retention of sockeye permitted in the Fraser River tidal and non-tidal waters. In Area 29, sockeye retention is not permitted currently in Sub-areas 29-3, 29-4 and 29-6 to 29-17, easterly of a line from Gower Point to Thrasher Rock Light to Salamanca Point on Galiano Island.

In Sub-area 29-8 (Boundary Bay) non-retention of sockeye is in effect year round.

ALL MARINE APPROACH AREAS OF AREA 28 and 29 including TIDAL FRASER are closed to sockeye retention. The only area in south coast "salt" water that is open is Barkley Sound.
The NoN Tidal Fraser is open from signs above the mouth of the Vedder/Sumas mouth at it's confluence with the fraser, up to Highway 1 bridge at hope. This area is open tomorrow till sundown on Sept 7th. There is an area open above that too but don't have that handy at the moment. that area closes Sept 9th.
I believe Peg Leg and all bars above it are open.

Actually the confusing part is 29-5 West of the line from Thrasher to Salamalca. Is it open or not? The first sentence says 29-5 closed, then the next paragraph says currently no retention East of the line from Thrasher to Salamalca. Does that mean it's ok West of the line? Does currently mean until we changed it? I never river fished because it the regs were too hard to follow. Now the salt changes are getting just as annoying. There, I vented.

Rod, will you be fishing for sockeye during the opening?

Can someone clarify this?

Can we retain sockeye in Richmond?

That's all I want to know ;)
