Don't get too crabby now!
« on: August 30, 2005, 10:16:28 AM »

A notice for the perch anglers. ;)

There are two species of shore crab present in BC waters, Hemigrapsus nudis and
Hemigrapsus oregonensis.  Shore crabs are the small green and purple crabs
found under rocks in the intertidal foreshore.  Very little is known about the
biology of these species except that they are entirely intertidal and perform
an important scavenging role in the ecosystem.  The Department does not assess
shore crab stocks.

Effective September 5, 2005, the daily limit for shore crab is reduced from 75
per day to 0 per day
in Area 28 (Howe Sound, Indian Arm and Burrard Inlet) and
in Subareas 29-6 to 29-17 (waters adjacent to the lower mainland, including
Boundary Bay).  This change will address concerns over stocks in Areas 28 and
29 which are adjacent to highly populated areas.

For more information contact a local Fisheries and Oceans Canada office:

Squamish Field Office (604) 892-3230
Steveston Field Office (604) 664-9250
Pender Harbour Field Office (604) 883-2313

Fisheries and Oceans Canada is very concerned about illegal fishing activity
and asks for assistance from the general public in reporting activities of this
nature or any contravention of the Fisheries Act and Regulations.  Anyone with
information can call the 24-hour, toll-free Observe, Record, Report line at 1-
800-465-4336.

I am surprised there needs to be a limit...and handful for bait is the most I could ever go thru and that would be rare.

A handful may change the entire population structure on the beach. ;)
