Arnt hatchery steelhead smolts released from the hatchery, so they later return to the hatchery as adults from their instinces?
No they are loaded into tanker trucks from The Freshwater Fisheries of B.C.'s Abbotsford hatchery. After loaded at the FOC Chilliwack hatchery they are pumped back into the river usually just above Vedder Crossing.

The idea is they want them to stay in the lower river when they return from the ocean as adults.

This is supposed to leave the upper river spawning areas to the wild fish. This is supposed to work in theroy but some do head into the upper river with a few returning to the hatchery channel.

On the other hand all other salmonids raised at the hatchery are released there.

So you are more likely to hook a steelhead below the vedder crossing i presume.

As I mentioned above all the other salmonids are released at the hatchery proper

No they release them in the hope they will stay in the lower. When we did the telemenary steelhead study this was to attempt to show were they went, stayed, and were they spawned. I donated a good number of these fish and t was an interesting program A lot of info was gathered as well. The report just came out and I have it somewhere on the computer, if I remember I will find it and send to Rodney to post if he wishs.
