I recently purchased the Cuda 240 S/GPS from Walmart and love it. After taxes I believe I only paid $360!!!

Garmin eTrex Legend. Cost me just over $250, I think, and that was a year and a half ago. I've been able to get accuracy to 2 metres with in some locations. Great for marking hot spots, and allows route planning, in case you get caught in the fog (I've used it for this a few times).

There is a newer version of this unit, but with colour screen, may want to give that a try also, it has a few extras over the old one too.

HumminBird makes a good selection of these combo's, starting with the Matrix Line at just below your desired budget, to way way above  ;D
I've used their products for decades, and always found them to be first-rate. Expect my next will be one of their higher end units (if and/or when the old one of theirs finally bites the dust, or I find some unexpected jingle somehow finds it's way into the wallet).

You can find their selection here: http://www.humminbird.com/black.asp?ID=354

Good Luck with your decision!

Cheers,
