New FOC Fishing Site (Recreational)
« on: April 26, 2005, 10:03:14 PM »

I have just been notified this evening of a new FOC rec. fishing website that went on line this morning. You may wish to check it out.

The girl who finished it did a good job, I'll be sending my congratulations to her.

My only rant is.... Why is there a need to actually change the URL whenever the entire site is rebuilt? Now I have to go back to check all the links on FWR to correct them. ::)

Typical FOC as most things they do to the recreational fisher makes a lot of work for the rest of us. It is never easy, that is why we have so many meetings etc.. ::)

My concerns are included in the congratulations to her, just sent it.

Not only it takes up time for me to go back and change everything, it is definitely difficult for anglers who have bookmarked the old site to follow.

I'm assuming (hopefully correctly) that they have a redirect on the old page.  I've noticed that they keep redirects up for a VERY long time at  .gc.ca sites.

Response:

As far as the change in url goes - although I realized this would be a
concern early on I really did not have a choice about this aspect. The
original recreational fishing site was comprised of three distinct parts -
The central recreational fishing pages (found at
http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/recfish), the Sport Fishing Guide tidal waters
(originally found at http://www-comm.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/pages/sfg) and the
Freshwater supplement (originally found at
http://www-comm.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/pages/freshwater). This was the core of
the difficulties that our users were having which was that we had three
distinct areas, with very different urls, and no synthesis between the
three. Since one of our goals was to roll three distinct areas into one -
with a directory system that tied them all together, the only logical way to
do that was to include all pages in a single directory system under one of
the urls - the one making the most sense being the shortest and least
complicated.

Although there will be more changes on our website in the near future - my
goal is to bring all our pages in line with the same way of thinking with
which we approached the recreational fishing site (information grouped based
on user-interest rather than departmental structure). I do not forsee any of
the urls for the pacific region recreational fishing site changing for some
time as I think the directory name and structure makes sense as they are
now.

Hope that explains why we have made some of these changes - thanks for your
continued support and linking to our website!
