Heading out tomorow. Will probably try aorund the QA marker, unless I hear any very promising reports from elswhere. Kinda figured that fish well be on their way to the Fraser, and I've had them mill around the QA around this time of year in the past. We'll be heading out at ~10:00 to hit the 12:20 tide.

Anyone else heard otherwise that may be worth my while ?

Will post a report tomorrow.

Have a good time at the clean up tomorrow everyone that's going. Dad seemed a little unwilling to drive all the way to Chilliwack.

where do you guys launch when fishing around the QA marker, or bowen, just finished getting all the gear to fish the chuck, looking forward to staying away from the fraser this year, if I can figure out how to fish the ocean,

Went out, caught nothing...that just about sums it up.

Some of the minor points about today's trip. WIND, be carful to really take your time when getting out there. We encountered a 3 ft chop in some places, not much fun in our little boat. For this reason, we decided that the QA was not really worth it to go trooping through it all. We hugged the shore and made it out to hole-in-the-wall, it was a LOT nicer in and around horseshoe bay. Dropped anchovies to 100-125 ft with flashers. Had one solid hit at 120 ft just after tide change, popped the rigger and ripped the bait clean off. Heard of one shaker taken earlier in the day, but norhting else hook or landed. Went towards Bowen island, met a couple of guys just packing up and hadn't hooked anything.

Wind let off for a bit towards the end of our day (~3:30).The ride home was a little sloppy, but the weather was great when we actually got gear in the water.

best bets right now seems to be poiler or thrasher rock area, with good numbers of decent fish. 60 to 140ft anchovy down deep and hoochies up top.there seems to be a few around defense islands as well, and if the fishin sucks , well the prawnin has been stellar.
heard some promising news from coal ports as well, same kinda game, though the fish can run a lil shallower.

Have to say that you were definitely right about yesterday being windy. I was on the water too and all I can say is that YES it was windy and it did make for uncomfortable trolling and running.

In my usual fashion, I had six rods down most of the time, and my boat managed 6 spings ranging from grilse to 22 inchers...and 4 were about 19 inches..
 
No keepers for me. Then again, didn't see anyone else get any keepers either.

Met a guy that came back to the dock with his son yesterday and he was fishing Cowan Pt. and he had an 18lb Spring.

Other than that..you can say that again, IT WAS HIDEOUS TROLLING as if you were trolling with the wind, the downrigger wires were stretched way out...

I fished the mile markers to the bell buoy, to Pt Atkinson yet nothing but shakers. At one point there were 10 other boats, and one of the local charter firms was out in force, but didn't see too much going on there either.

Oh well. going to get out at least a couple more times this week preferably off the slash as that seems to be where the action is at this time of year.

Was just listening to Berry's Bait and Tackle report and they state that the slash has tapered off but  yet the other side is on fire.

Wondering about the Coal Ports for the guys that are reading this board.......I have heard stories about all kinds of HOGS that pass right by the T10, Coal Ports, and Tsawassen at this time of year, as these are supposed to be headed way North up the Fraser. Apparently it is starting about now to the middle of July before the bulk of local runs that arrive in late August/September.

These fish that are arriving now are apparently supposed to be reds and they don't mill around the mouth of the rivers, they just seem to shoot right in and move up the river.

Wondering if anyone on this thread has or knows of someone that has had success fishing for this run of large springs that people can't seem to catch?

No one seems to fish west coast style off the mouth of the fraser. T10, sandheads ect.
by west coast style I mean big herring, cut plug, or motor mooching as some call it. Those fish on the west coast, staging for running up the river tend to swim up top. Many ideas on why exist such as they might be getting acclimated to the fresh water by swimming just above or below the thermocline. Moving in and out of stronger and weaker salinity.
Generally these returning fish are in the top 40 to 80 feet.
I think the "banana" as it is called was closed for so long no one remembers how to fish it. Gramps has loads of old black and white pics from this area, notably sandheads and out front of canoe pass. Lot's of pics from april may and june with big 25 to 40lbs fraser reds from way back. All taken on large cut plug or live herring all fished on trolling/mooching weights and NO downriggers.
There are decent numbers of these fish in the river now and they will be flowing thick within a month.
I'd be out there trying it out with the "old school" methods, but ....... still haven't bought a new boat..... hmmmmmm

Interesting you should say that...and thanks for that suggestion.

Been there, done that off the mouth of the Fraser with Cut Plugs. Very difficult when you have nothing but miles and miles of water to cover. I have tried cut plugs, commercial gear, and just about everything at one time or another during the last few years with no success for any big lunkers 20 lbs or up at this time of year. A couple of years ago, I did get lucky in July though...way south of the QA, way the heck off shore...with a cut plug...but that was JULY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
