Vedder River March 16th - Cold, wet and empty
« on: March 16, 2005, 05:14:06 PM »

Sneaked out this morning as the weather forecast predicted patchy showers. Well, patchy showers turned into some serious cold heavy rain. ::) When the clouds cleared, new patches of snow could be seen on the nearby hills.

I arrived at the river around 7am, with no one in sight except 2:40 (I think, bad eye sight) on the other side just finishing before work. Today's weapons included the usual roe bags and also a whole bunch of ghost shrimps that fishersak kindly delivered to my house last night. :o Lew showed up 30 minutes after I began and we started to work together on this run. I spotted one slot that had potential to hold a couple of fish. After a few drifts with a roe bag, float was buried hard and I pulled almost at the same time, but apparently not fast enough as the Drennan flew over my head. The mesh of the bag was completely destroyed. Definitely a fish.... Lew said, "Tie on a bug and throw it back in now!" so I tossed the line back in with a very lively ghost shrimp at the end. First drift, nothing. Second drift, float was buried! I pulled again immediately but again the Drennan flew over my head! >:(

It was Lew's turn. I stood back and let him to entice that big bugger. At this point Itosh and his dad showed up. A few drifts later, Lew's float was also buried and once again the Drennan flew over our heads. ::)

That was pretty much all the action we had today. Water level lower than last Friday, clarity is also very good. With this rain, this weekend's condition should be excellent, so good luck everyone. :)

Today's hero shot. ;D

This little bugger nibbled on my ghost shrimp once. Itosh came in soon after and hauled it out of there. ;D

Looks like the only bright spot for you to today was that I bought you lunch at Cookies, of course. ;D

Chris, where is your fishing journals?  You stop it all together after you get us hooked into it as a daily must-read.   ;D

Seriously, are the crowds down, and are early morning fishing still reasonably good?  You don't have to tell us your daily fishing result.  It is kind of too much pressure for any body to have to report fishing result daily.  But some sorts of river report once in a while will keep us up with the status of things. Your call. Thanks.

Same day for me, no fish, lots of effort put in and had a minor meltdown.

Pulled these little gems out of the river. Are they yours? How many barbs can ya count?

Thats a fine mess Troutslayer >:(. It seems at least 50% of the rigs I find are barbed. Thats what happens when there is practically zero enforcement. I have yet to see a conservation officer on the Vedder.

Good report Rod, I'll try and hook that big bugger on Friday maybe, if I can get away.

Sounds like SteelheadKing had the 26oz flu again ;).

I have just had so much on the go so I have not been out on the river for some time. When I get back on the flow will give reports. It takes time to write the stories which I enjoy but sometimes I think some people may tire of reading them. :-\

That was me Rod!! What a beek! I watched you walk in, thought you might look familiar, but decided maybe not as your new (?) gold centre pin reel threw me (couldnt place a guy with a gold centre pin). I did make a weak welcoming 'angler to angler braving the rain' wave, but you did not see...I did notice the bugs you were carefully tying on though. Typical...eyes on the other's guy bait more then noticing who he is.  :D

Sounds like you were close to one there!! That dirty dirt bag! You'll get him next time.

Not a nice sight Trout Slayer...Im making a collection of those. How many bouncing bettys??? The line ball Im creating is the size of a baseball already, and this is from 3 short fishing trips. So much of it is in parking areas, not where it might have been legitamately lost on the water. 75% of it appears to be of 20lb + test.

Translation: The air outside the blanket was colder than the air inside the blanket. ;)

Thanks for lunch again. :-[ I did get out for another hour with itosh after lunch as the sky cleared up slightly, but that didn't make a difference in the end. ::) Itosh did fall in love with my Islander Steelheader though. ;)

It's ok, it was obvious that both you and Jon were blinded by the shine of my Islander pin. ;D

Non-retention of chinook salmon in Vedder starting March 19th until July opening.
