De-greasing Bearings Is So Easy And So Important
« on: November 12, 2004, 09:50:10 PM »

There's been talk around the net-mainly on Bass fishing boards-about degreasing bearings and then using a fast oil on them to increase casting distance/ease of operation.
I'd done mine in the past in a half hearted fashion but last night I sat down and did 'em up right.
Man alive what a difference!
It's like having a brand new Calcutta CT250!
Actually even better because it casts that much farther.

Once you know how to disassemble your reel clean the bearings in lighter fluid make sure they are totally dry before putting oil in them and reassembling.

Try some of these links for your reel maintenace.

I always soak my bearings in lighter fluid or Simple Green for couple of hours and dry them completely before using Hot Sauce (you can get it at Mike's reel Repairs) and, man, you can let it fly! You gotta tighten the adjustment on the reel spool a bit so it doesn't over spin and cause birdnesting. It IS like getting a new reel, man.

Thanks for all the links Colin. Looks like I'll be busy reading for a while.

One small but important detail I'd like to add here.
If you're looking to use some Rocket Fuel be sure you aren't going Steelheading in cold weather.
It doesn't perform at all well in subzero temps in fact the manufacturer says forget it altogether if it's used in freezing weather-it isn't formulated for that at all.
