All the snell knot examples I see on the 'Net look like this:

Note that the standing end of the line somehow comes back and does the looping.  I can tie my know when my leader is attached to the swivel already.  All these other knots appear to require a TWO free ends.

DS, Without seeing your knot, I think you're using a modified snell.  You pass the leader through the eye and double back over the shank and wrap 5-6 times.  Then you pass the leader through the eye again and wrap the loop you just created over the leader section another 5-6 times. and pull tight.  you just created an egg loop.  It's hard to explain in words and easy to show.

At picture "C", you should have a bigger loop.  Hold the leader portion flat against the hook shank and wrap 5-6 times over the leader & pull tight.

I use an egg-loop to hold my wool.  In sunny clear and low water conditions, smaller pieces and in white water or cloudy, high water conditions about 1.5" length wool folded over in half in the loop.

No, the knot that I tie looks like this:

Everyone is linking to pictures of a modified snell, or steelheaders bait loop.  Not the same. :(

I've just found a moment to refer to my "Ashley book of knots".  Similar knots are:
1. Manger knot page 44.
2. Izaak walton page 52 & 53.
3. Hangman's page 59.
4. Monkey's Fist page 354.

All are modified versions of a whip.

Ashley's is a great book if you like knots.

DS, just stick with the egg loop. You won't regret it, trust me !

The thing is  - this is what I've learned.  I can tie it in about 10 secs (if my hands are cold).  Another knot would require added learning.

Grumman - thanks for the references.  My buddy has Ashley, but I don't have access to it :(

I'll have him bring it in to work.

Cheers!

If it work's do it! :)  I prefer the bait loop because it's what I learned.

You'll like the Ashley book if you can get it.  Over 3900 knots on 593 pages.  I love it for around the house and camping.  You can tie lots of cool looking knots that get people talking.

Have a look at the "Highwayman's Hitch".  Cool Hitch

I use it all the time for pulling long objects like logs.  Keeps them stright.  I love useing knots for sinching loads on my trailer.  I always get people saying "you'll never get that mess undone" and one pull later the whole thing is undone.  Lots of geeky fun ;D
