Vedder Oct. 3
« on: October 03, 2004, 11:40:21 AM »

Just back from Ranger Run... I got there at 5  waaaay too late as there were many hopefulls on the bank already.

Took a spot set my short leader and float...and waited for light...Home by 10:30 with a beauty of a
18 pounder chromer Spring!

Saw a few flossed Coho taken and several jumping. But light Coho action this morning.

Well, it looks like every angler in the Lower Mainland decided to congregate in the Vedder today lol.... ;D We arrived at 6:10am, thinking that it maybe early. Think again, 20 cars in the lot already. :o Fished for an hour without any sniff, decided to go scouting for future spots instead. Didn't see a single fish hooked. I think I'll stick to weekdays in the future. ;)

Fished lower Vedder from the first light until 9:30. Nada for me. Saw a few fish hooked and only one Chinook landed. Super crowded. Today I understood what means Gong show. ‘My spot’ was usually shared between up to 5 guys on weekdays, but it was invaded by a crowd of 30 today. Will better sleep on weekends at home in the future.

Just got back from the Vedder. Same story as everyone else-lots of springs, no coho. I guess yesterday I was at the right place at the right time. My friend Rob put on a show of how to land springs with his hot red roe, he was unbeatable today. We each kept a jack. We did watch some guys hook coho but they were long leader flossed at first light in shallow side channels.

Skunked Again
« Reply #9 on: October 03, 2004, 08:47:31 PM »

Picked up a couple buddies this morning and headed to the Vedder.  Got there around 9:30am and looked for another buddy we knew should be somewhere between the crossing and Peach.  When we found him he already had a nice Coho so we had high hopes.  Fished a run for an hour without any luck so I then decided to wander around a bit.  There were quite a few guys fishing the north bank so I avoided them and went to the other side of the island I was on.  There was a large pool no one was fishing so I took a look and saw a large Chum sitting in it.  Just ahead of the chum were 5 chrome fish.  Couldn't make out what they were.  Positioned myself to try to drift over them and tried some casts.  After about 10 minutes of casting went back to my vantage point and saw that the fish had left.   :'(

Lunch time.  Got the troups together and went to Ponta Vista.  After lunch we went to Boulder and saw no action so we split up.  One of use went back to Peach and the rest went to Bell Acres.  Nada......  Saw a couple springs jumping but they weren't takin what I was offerin.  So we took off to Lickman.  My buddy who went to Peach after lunch was leaving Lickman.  He had walked all the way down and ended up catching a Coho at Lickman.  Thats two for him and none for the rest of us.

But despite the crowds and getting skunked.  I still think I had a great day.  Oh, I also waded too deep for my hip waders and filled up with water.  But still a beautiful day  :)

Got back from holidays, decided to grab a 1/2 day at the Vedder.fished some pockets up at Slease park wool/roe combo to no availle, dropped down to quarrey on the vedder side, hooked a fresh spring and released .
mid-morning stopped at the upper canal, spinner behind a float several guys fishing with a semi-guide, one of which questioned my style of fishing ??? as they were using wool,I mentioned that leaders in the range of 8-10 feet was not usually considerd the best practice.
A good Day , looks like a lot of nice steelhead runs developing.

That semi-guide wasn't me ;D  I agree, I've been hammered pretty hard for a long leader comment in dead slow conditions on another post.  You're correct that the canal is not the place for long leaders as it is too shallow and believe it or not too fast.

Scalper66,
I was shown about 15 years ago by a very good fisherman that coulor makes all the difference.  We arrived at limit hole at about 2 pm on a sunny day.  Everyone was throwing either roe or wools in red, orange, pink, green and combinations of.  He told me to observe for 10 minutes everybody else.  He asked me what I think I should use and I said "peach or red".  He said "good I'll use blue".  First cast he was into a chrome Coho.  He told me that the fish see the same thing all day long and become immune to the colour.  Try something different than everybody else.  From that day on, I always carry as many colours as I can and I change often if I get no results.  that's my $.02.

I'll second the comment on changing wool colour triggering bites. I've fished a spot and fish would move in all ther guys fishijng got bites. After the bite stopped, others continued to fish the same gear. Often  by changing wool colour I've gotten another bite from the fish that were now ignoring the previous gear.
