Heard an early coho showed up in the Chilliwack hatchery couple of days ago.

The rain probably boosted it in.

Yes but if you some spend some time you can get away from all of that.

We usually find a nice area for short floating.

If that doesn't work, fish under Keith wilson with the 100 other guys, 20 foot leaders and 2oz betty. See you there DS....  

The only way you'll see me there, is if I'm coming back from real fishing, and feel like some entertainment - watching

Thanks TS for pointing out to Rod's excellent article on shortfloating. A very effective techniqueand you hardly lose any gear. The only shortcoming on this method is that I have seen finicky fish swim UPWARD and bumping on the lure without a trace of float dipping and leaving the angler completely unaware of getting a strike.
Ho Ho Ho go catch some coho.

In all respect I donot find any short coming in short floating at all as when the coho are in you will have no trouble getting your limit on the Vedder.

Nothing more exciting in fishing seeing the float going down as dawn begins to break over your favorite stream as you can hardly make out the red top of your Drennan float, you wonder if your eyes are playing tricks on you as it quickly dips from view.

No, coming back on the float, a solid feeling, (no not bottom as you are 2 feet or so off it ) seeing the tell tale chrome flash of a fresh run coho before it begins to peel line from your reel that is grasped in your now shaking hand.

Does that get you ready and excited for the coho season less than a month ahead?

I want to head out to the mouth of the vedder tomorrow but not sure if it would be worth while.  Any one know if there are any fish in yet??  Thanks for the help

Chris, no disagreement in what you said. I take it you normally fish downstream of the Vedder bridge in the shallow runs and that's very smart as you're intercepting fresh fish and have been very successful. you've got the s/f technique down pat.
I usually fish the upper half and it varies from runs to deep pools and rapids so the approach is different in each case and that's my fishing challenge. The nice thing about the C/V is that one can find the solitude away from the crowds, even if you have to settle for a less productive spot. Fall fishing for is so much nicer than the sockeye mania because I start out after lunch and fish for 3-4 hours. Another big plus when you live in Chilliwack and able to go fishing on a daily basis if desired. Had some fun at the Peg but the cooler weather is more to my liking.

Always a chance you will find one but as you know it is a bit early but the fun of it is if you find one you will have the first coho of the season.

 Of course any day you can get out that is a good day successful or not.

The colour of the Vedder was oK yesterday and it has risen a bit with the recent rains.

It even chased the guys doing the gravel excavation off the river.

I saw above Salwein they could not get one of their bridges out in time.

Some coho are in there.  A couple years ago i caught 4 coho in a short time using spoons in the canal area on august 26.  I went back a few days later and nothing.  Small runs come and I was lucky.

More than likely I will be fishing there sunday . I  usually park below kieth wilson  and quite often walk and fish all the way to the highway bridge . quite often only running into several other fisherman.
I fish this area until  mid oct. then I move up river into the crowds
