Has Anybody Tried Using a Drone to Cast Farther on the Fraser?
« on: September 11, 2025, 11:27:56 AM »

I am probably done for this pink season. I was watching some youtube videos where surf fishers were using drones to drop their bait/lures hundreds of meters from shore. I thought it might be a cool idea to use this drone technique on the fraser to get your presentation to those fish beyond your casting reach.  It might be a great way to fish for sturgeon from shore.

If you decide to try it out, make sure you are not doing it in no-drone zones. Much of the fishable Fraser river in and around Vancouver is a no-fly zone for drones, including, but not limited to most of Richmond. There's a chance you will get an expensive ticket.

Another thing to consider is the large number of birds flying in the area.
People have reported numerous instances of birds taking down drones (and vice-versa). I even witnessed a guy filming one of my secret lakes lose his high end drone to a bald eagle.
I can't thank the eagle enough that the footage never made it to the internet.  ;D

While maybe not here, has also been done using kites and Hot Air balloons on a tether.

I don't have a drone (and you would need a powerful one to haul a 16oz lead weight and bait). And I don't have the gear or experience to fish sturgeon. Maybe if I retire, I may take it up as a hobby.

If anybody is interested, here is a starting point:
