What percentage of hatch Coho clipped ?
« on: September 09, 2023, 05:02:30 PM »

regarding the current Coho returns, anyone know what percentage of the hatchery Coho were actually clipped?
Also, any clipping records/percentages for the recent 3 years?

(I wish fishers would stop calling all the unclipped fish "wild")

A few years ago I saw a roll call of most if not all the community hatcheries for the Strait of Georgia and they all said they clip 100% of their coho releases. Pretty much all the Federal hatcheries do with the exception of some in remote locations like the Northwest part of the Island as sufficient staff/volunteers aren't available. In those locations there is a retention on non-clipped fish. I think the old claim that many hatchery coho aren't clipped is mostly a myth.

Work at the Little Campbell Hatchery and can say that 100% of the Coho released have been clipped by volunteers under the supervision of DFO.
In the fall on the returning coho the numbers last year were about 3 to 1 in favour of wild fish (unclipped) vs hatchery stock

Not all Cap cohos are tagged. I've turned in several heads and the results show no tags.

I phoned around to a few hatchery's to prove this point a year ago, posted the hatchery managers information if people wanted to confirm and i was still called out for being a lier.

Some people don't want to believe this, even when you present them with all the information.
