Trout ID
« on: May 31, 2022, 09:53:33 PM »

Caught a beautiful trout a week ago , 22” . Kamloops area . Seems I can’t identify what strain of trout this was . It’s back was all gold and had very few light spots above the lateral line and pure white and chrome below . I looked up strains but doesn’t seem to compare with Blackwater, Gerard, Fraser Valley, Pannask . And whatever that other one like Tzan something. Has anyone else landed such a creature.
Any thoughts ?

Description: Horsefly strain rainbows exhibit a distinctive golden tone. Typically, they are densely spotted above the lateral line. Where the fishing pressure is low, mature specimens can attain relatively big sizes. In Quesnel Lake, they can attain weights of more than nine kilograms (20 pounds).

The Pennask strain usually has very little spoting spots above the lateral line.

Description: The Blackwater strain is often more densely spotted from head to tail than the Pennask strain. They typically have a high concentration of spots above the lateral line, a body-spotting pattern that’s common in coastal rainbow trout.

in both photos there is a goldish tinge above the lateral line. How colors look will depend on light conditions, water conditions (ie tannin vs clear vs algae stain, a deep lake vs shallow, the color of the bottom yada)

remember all these strains are rainbow trout. Trout appearance will also vary among individuals

Yes ,, this one could have been Pannask . Golden girl Pannask .
Most of the 20 -30 we caught were Blackwater as well as Fraser Valley rainbow . Guess this one was special  :).
Wish I could figure out a way to post the snap shot.

the picture has to be posted on another website such as a photo service such as imgur.com,  facebook, photobucket etc

you need the html web address for your photo. A simple way to get it is to right-click on the photo with your mouse  then select copy image link from the drop down menu

1 click on reply or start new message

2 paste the web address ie: https://i.imgur.com/DHsaOkC.jpg
into the post box:

- now you can highlight the address by holding down the left mouse button, moving the mouse to high light the address then release the left button

- then click the insert image button just below the in the upper left

3 post your photo

I think that is a Pennask.

FWIW all the native Southern interior rainbows (Kamloops & Gerrards)  are considered to be Columbia River Redband Rainbow trout, part of the Redband rainbow trout sub-species.

The Rainbow trout "strains" described on Gofishbc are not a taxonomical classification but just a description of where the particular eggs are collected in the wild to be raised in a hatchery. Most anglers seem to agree there are behavioural differences between the 3 or 4 strains.

Nice. On a side note, I saw these gold coloured rainbow trout for sale at Safeway in Poco a month or so ago.

I scratched around a bit and they look to be 'golden rainbow' or 'palomino' trouts. Apparently they're a stocked and managed colour variant rainbow with origins in the New England area of the States.
