I and the senior regional biologist spent a couple of days filming at Sulphurous Lake to highlight the work that has been done in recent years on the kokanee fisheries in the area. Pretty good fishing... Fish were always coming by in 20 to 30ft. From 7:30am to 8:30am the bites were consistent and sporatic throughout the day after that.

Corn, single eggs, fished below a dodger, or jigging a tiny Croc spoon did the trick.



I cooked some up tonight and they were fantastic.

I've had the pleasure of fishing that lake once years ago. Had kokanee coming to the surface at dusk smashing my indicators and lake trout taking my chironomids. It's a really neat lake to fish when the water is open as well.

Wow, such bright fish; I mean scales-falling-off bright.

I haven't ice fished, but the pics I've seen invariably show rainbows that are dark/grey or coloured. How come that's the case for rb but these koks are bright?

My understanding is that these Kokanee won't spawn for 9+ months so they stay bright whereas the Rainbows will spawn in spring. Triploid Rainbows are brighter.

The kokanee we're targeting are all still 8 or 9 months away from spawning maturity like typhoon said so all of them look like this. They are diploid but are not expected to spawn because the lake do not have the habitat for it, so take your limit if you can get them. Diploid kokanee are used instead of triploid because of growth performance.

Most rainbows I've encountered while ice fishing have in fact been very bright. The dark coloured ones are usually spawners or old triploids.
