This season's Wally Hall Junior Memorial Steelhead Derby begins today, and you can actually buy your ticket online now beside getting them at either Fred's Custom Tackle:

Tickets are once again $20 each and all proceeds to to Fraser Valley Watersheds Coalition for more habitat restoration work on the Chilliwack/Vedder River.

A few weeks ago, Wally and Fred gave Natashia at FVWC a cheque of just over $8,000 from last year's derby. I asked Wally what was the most tickets sold in one season, he said around 530. I told him that we should have no problem selling 1,000 and generate $20,000! That amount could end up being $100,000 after FVWC asks different governments to match it for future projects. This season's proceeds will potentially be used for the next project in September, another new habitat site which is being planned out at the moment.

Lets get it done, it's not a donation but rather a investment for more fish in the future. Plus if you catch the biggest hatchery steelhead you'd win $1,000.

This is a great cause, I enter and don't even fish. Without this work being done there would be virtually no wild early run steelhead ... that means no brood fish for hatchery stock.

$200 have been donated throught the FVWC website so far. I will find out how many tickets have been sold since Dec. 1.

Like I said in there, it's a win win opportunity. The ticket gets you out fishing for steelhead and chance to win if you get a big hatchery fish, and if you don't end up fishing, you might win a draw prize and 100% of the money X 2 is going to build us new habitat along the Vedder = More fish in the years to come.

Bringing this back up. A few months ago, I mentioned that this season's goal is to raise $20,000 for habitat restoration on the Chilliwack/Vedder River. I had a conversation with Fred a few days ago, and he said we are at around $25,000 now! With five days left for the derby, we are hoping to raise a bit more. $30k would be sweet but I think this is already fantastic. There are some exciting projects being planned for this September.

This is awesome! Great job making this happen under trying times.
Knowing Natashia from the FVWC, she will turn that 25k into 100k worth of habitat restoration for wild salmonids, birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, all in the Chilliwack River watershed.
