Go with mono. 12 lb test max is all you need for short floating the Vedder. Braided line usually spooks the fish in clearer water and creates havoc when snagged up.

Go with 30lb braid.  Use a swivel and 12-15lb mono leader so if you get snagged, only the short piece of mono breaks and is left in the river.  Of course, using braid in freezing weather does not work.  This being said, it depends on the type of fishing you plan on doing.  Float, bounce, spoons, jigs, spinners....?  I would only go straight mono for float fishing.

for such a big reel, it is better spool with 40-60lb braid. easier on tangle, never worry of the main line.

anyone put backing of some sort behind braid? The stuff is expensive!

Yes. And then I just swap out the top 1/2 to 1/3 of the spool.

I use both, and there are reasons for both.  If I am fishing Tamihi or above, I use braid.  I can fish a boulder-strewn run and rarely lose a piece of lead.  If I am fishing the crossing or below, I use mono.  40 lb power pro is good for braid - thinner braid will give you more wind knots and more trouble when you get tangled.  It is still plenty thin.  I use 20 lb ultragreen when I use mono - less birdsnests, more time fishing.  If I want to be stealthy I use a fluorocarbon leader (actually, that is all I use lately).

I use the braid as backing for my mono.

THIS!  Just get a one shot spool of MUG 12lb for the level wind, or take it to a shop and have them spool it up for you.  Should be plenty strength for the Vedder.

My CP and levelwind have 15 lb. Trilene Big Game mono top shots. I use old cheap braid underneath both. My spinning reel which is used for lures has 12-15 lb. braid with 5 feet or so of fluoro at the end.
