Yacht sinks at Sandheads.
« on: November 19, 2019, 08:03:32 PM »

Tv news has been catching my eyes lately...yesterday showed 2 bobcats standing & growling on some property in the Port Moody area. Keep your little dogs & pet cats in the house.
Today 20 minutes into the news a story of a Yacht sinking at Sand heads.
Owners radioed Coastguard but it was filling with water fast so they got on their tender & got off.
By the time the hovercraft got on scene it was too late to deploy water pumps.
Yacht is now sitting on the bottom.
Not sure what area of Sandheads as there is shallow areas & it drops off into deeper water.
Boat hit something in the water.
Not surprised as honestly it's Russian roulette motor boating PNW waters.
Always a possibly to hit some log dead head debris etc...in the Fraser or area waters.
No one drown so...that's good.

Not cool.
Pollution in a sensitive area...marshes to the north & south.
Plus the boat itself & contents...imagine all the stuff in a 100 ft boat...
My guess the tide was so high the water covered some part of the rock jetty & the pilot thought he could motor across east of the big lighthouse.
At south end of Gilbert Rd rocks jet out quite far from the shore. When tide comes up even a foot over that shelve unknowing boaters think it's deep water. Wham if they motor too close.
The whole area boaters must know the waters.  By Delta not too far from the tunnel in those side channels / houseboats there was ( maybe still is ? ) a big sucker deadhead  under the water & right in the middle.....crazy. Seen it just under the water for years that I boated by there on occasions.
EDIT IN:
Deadhead in that channel just SW of a Captain Cove mentioned it's Delta but maybe it 's Ladner.
