Any FWR FN members?
« on: August 04, 2004, 11:54:08 PM »

Are there any members of FWR that are First Nations members? That would be interesting to see what they would think of all that is going on. Probably hard to find an unbiased FN member or an unbiased FWR member for that matter. Would be neat to see those debates on here.

Would be interesting to listen to their perspective. Hopefully the discussion will be civil.

Like everything else, it's a few bad apples that ruin the bunch.  Most of them are decent, law abiding people like us.  But, its very hard, at times, to not get sucked into painting them all with the same brush.  Too bad the Gov. didn't notice the good will on the river the last 2 years.  The Govenment is the one we should be blaming this whole mess on.

Arrrrg...you got me started again!  I'm going to get back to work and forget about this until at leat 5 pm.

It surprises me when people think that all FN people do not pay taxes!  Where do people get these ideas??  Yes, it is true under some circumstances that FN people are exempt from certain taxes... But, people need to understand that a majority of FN people pay taxes, all taxes... just as everyone else.  There are just as many nonstatus indians in Canada as nonstatus indians, and they all pay tax! In addition, under the circumstances when many FN do not pay taxes, it should not always be looked at as an enviable benifet!  For some, not paying tax is the only thing that is keeping them alive.  What does it matter if a person is taxed or not when he/she is almost forced to live in poverty to gain the tax exemptions??
Sorry to vent, but I think there is a huge ammount of ignorance on these boards about FN people.
Just as non FN people see the bad side of FN people on the Fraser through the actions of a few individuals, if a FN person was to go to the Vedder and see all the crap that goes on with non FN people on a daily basis and judge white/or non aboriginal fishermen based on these values as seen on the Vedder... the resulting image of nonaboriginal fishermen would be almost the same.  People should not judge FN by what they see with a minority of their population while fishing on the Fraser, and it would be equally as pointless for a FN person to judge non-aboriginals on what can be witnessed on the Vedder.

and I also think that if there are many FN people on the board, its a shame if there were any hostility towards them, unless deserved and not based on biases or assumptions.  Communication is the key.

Anyway, these topics are like throwing rocks at a bees nest.  Probably not much can come out of it.  Just my 2 cents..

Good luck on the waters guys, and tight lines (I have had no chance to get out recently so I envy all you who have!!)

Tsuri...

Just my 2 cents...

I have a handful of friends that are Native Indian. They have Native Status and do not pay the taxes. Sure I guess some people maybe that are not STATUS native pay some taxes but I really don't get the rest of what you said. No taxes just to survive?! Validate that would ya? How did all of that come from my little stupid thing in the beginning? You seem like an angry angry person. Oh well, we all got problems.

I think Tsuri brought up some very good point, it shows how easy it is to stereotype when there lacks understanding.

Being only in Canada for around ten years, I consider myself uninformed when it comes to First Nations status etc. What I don't understand is, why would anyone want to be specially treated. If I am exempted from paying tax, I think I would almost feel left out, not being part of the nation's working force and all. Is the opportunity simply not there for First Nations individuals to join the majority? Why do they feel the need to barrier themselves?

As mentioned above, only a small number of FN individuals are stirring up the problem in the driftnetting issue. Very important to remember that. :)

This is also something I was thinking about today. If someone told me I could catch fish with a boat and nets, I probably would. (maybe not) But possibly. If the powers that be say its ok and I can profit from it, I might. Alot of people might. My point? Don't get angry with the FN. Get mad at the people that allow it.
P.S. If not paying taxes makes someone feel left out, I would quite enjoy feeling left out.

rodney
i may be wrong but i believe the deal with natives and taxes is
if they are status indians and live on reservation they do not have to pay income taxes .
many FN people live off the reserve but keep an adress there to avoid tax
nice loop hole if you can get it

Exceptional post! tsuribaka and welcome to the site.

I agree there is a huge amount of ignorance on this site ... and in Canadian society in general. ( admittedly I am part of this non-educated group )

What we need here in my opinion are some articulate First Nation writers with thick skin and tons of patience to handle some of the misinformation passed around on sites like this.

I would like to see some pics posted here of the living conditions that these so called " lucky " FN people have to endure to maintain their status and their  " tax free " lifestyle.

It would shut a lot of critics up in a hurry... If you took the time to try to educate this lot... you would sure have my support.

CJ.

It occured to me that I am presuming you to be a FN person.
