Electric Trolling mother battery question...
« on: July 19, 2018, 02:45:15 PM »

I'm going to pick up a motor this weekend but it has no battery.

I've called around a few places trying to get info on what I need but answers have been conflicting.

Motor is a MinnKota of unknown model, can anyone shed some light on the type of battery I need, or someone knowledgeable to call about it?

Thanks...

As heavy as you can lift and as large as your watercraft can accommodate.

There are sealed deep cycle batteries that do the job.  I obtained one from Costco.  I assume they still have them.  Sealed so you don't get acid on yourself handling them as you must do often with your trolling motor battery.

I tried gel cell batteries from Canadian Tire but not big enough.  Ran flat on the second circuit of a small lake.

I believe wheelchair batteries would be suitable.  I understand that wheelchair batteries are often retired at an early stage in their life and are available at a low cost but I never searched hard enough to find a source.

You need a deep cycle 12v battery.
The larger the more capacity ie. group 31 is larger than a group 27.
The larger is also heavier and usualy costs more.
Edmonds Battery in New West/BBY is a good place but i also dont mind my latest one i got from Walmart.

A good charger is also very important.

Give Edmonds a call as the guy i dealt with a few years ago was very helpful.

--not all min kota's are 12 V...some are 24V so you will have to check the model but if it is smaller it is likely 12 V

I have a group 31 AGM. I switched to an AGM last year after traveling down a bumpy FSR. The battery leaked acid all over my LineX. I strongly recommend an AGM if you can afford one.
