Sea-Run’s Weekend Fishing Report

May 13th, 2016

Interior Trout

Well it may seem a bit abnormal considering that it is still only May 13th, but we are most certainly right into the swing of things for Interior Lakes. With an incredibly early start to the season, fishing has been quite productive for the most part the past 2-3 weeks in most lakes (varying on turn-over and hatches) as each lake is dependant on elevation and weather etc. Anglers have been having great success on many patterns, and as a standard “go-to” for this time of the year, leeches and chronomids cannot be beat. As the weather continues to warm up, so does the water temperature. It is a good thing to understand the changes that can happen week to week, day to day, and hour to hour. With warming temperatures, you will begin to see different hatches come off, as well as the size of the flies you are imitating (such as chronomids) can change in size, generally getting larger as the season progresses.

Saltwater Chinook

What has been an up and down Chinook season in local waters continues to stay the course as just that. Some days have been good, some days have been slow. Unlike our Winter Chinook fishery, we have not really seen much consistency with the Chinook fishing in the Strait. Fish have been tricky the locate for the most part, and have seemingly not been in large numbers like we have seen in years past. Mind you, this is quite often a migratory fishery, and fishing could change on a single tide. We will keep our hopes up that things improve as there is still plenty of time for fishing to get better. Anglers have been having success with the standards; Glow or UV Spoons in the 3.5 - 4” size, Glow/UV White, Pearl, and Green Hootchies, and Anchovies have all been producing. One thing to watch for are Pacific Cod which can be an absolute nuisance in this fishery. Regular line checks and eliminating the use of bait just may increase your success of not having these pesky little guys grab onto your gear.

 Local Lakes

Things have been very stable in our local lakes. Weather has been warm, and the fish have been stocked regularly. One thing you will want to watch closely are the water temperatures. Lakes that are much shallower will heat up very quickly with a warm spell, so you may want to look at straying over to some deeper lakes that remain quite cool throughout the remainder of Spring and into the Summer. Various techniques will work well; bobber fishing, bottom fishing, casting lures, and fly fishing are all very effective.

Local Lakes to try:

Como Lake
Lafarge Lake
Sasamat Lake
Buntzen Lake
Rice Lake
Alouette Lake
Mike Lake
Rolley Lake
Deer Lake

General River Fishing

This can be an interesting time for river fishing in our local area. Most rivers are on the rise and in freshet mode, or are closed, making any fishing opportunity difficult. Most river anglers at the current time will be targeting Sturgeon in the Fraser River, while some may be targeting Cutthroat or the last bit of the Winter/Spring Steelhead run. Sturgeon fishing has remained quite steady, although it is always good to exercise good caution and safety this time of year, and be incredibly familiar with the area you are fishing. During the Fraser freshet, mass amounts of debris consistently flow downriver creating obstructions while running up or down the river, as well as hitting anchor lines or gear. When driving, wear polarized glasses to cut the glare from the Sun on the water, and use extreme caution. If possible, tuck in closer to shore and watch where debris flows are happening. Good baits of choice are Eulachons, Lamprey, and Salmon Roe.
