Need help identifying Pitt Meadows fish (solved)
« on: April 26, 2016, 04:49:52 PM »

Hi there,

Saw this fish in a small pond in Pitt Meadows and am trying to identify it.  It was about 8" long and was hiding near lily pads. There are sunfish in the pond as well. Sorry for the poor quality photo.

Thx. Donna

Hard to determine 100%, but it looks like a rainbow trout to me.

The forward facing eyes and that big ol lip say large mouth to me. It's not a carp. Looks like it's well fed too.

Big mouth bass unless that's a koi/bass hybrid. Could be a Snakehead but my money is on the Large Mouth Bass.

Looks like its full of salmon fry with that chubby tummy. Maybe swallowed a couple frogs.

Thanks for your help everyone.  Poper, it's not meadow gardens. It's a little pond off McMyn by McLean Park. Lots of frogs and other wildlife.  I don't know a lot about fish but it was bigger than the little sunfish in there and it wasn't skittish or fast moving like a trout. The waterway runs along the Lougheed for a bit then shoots south towards the Fraser. I will see if I can get another picture this summer.

Thx again.

 :o
100% largemouth Bass.

You are right. It seems to have two adipose fins - frontal and posterior. That pretty much excludes trout.

Sadly every pond waterway in Pitt Meadows has bass, including the golf courses
