Sea-Run’s Weekend Fishing Report

April 20th

Steelhead

With very recent warmer weather conditions, a good majority, if not all local river systems have risen dramatically due to snow melt and early freshet. With that being said, there is still plenty of time to get out and chase these spectacular fish on both gear and fly rod setups. With the weather shaping up to be cooler and some light showers expected, it may save the last little bit of our Spring fishery. There will be a lot of Steelhead nearing spawning, spawning, or on their way out, but there are still many shots at fresh fish this of the year. You just have to time it right.

Cutthroat

April is the month for Coastal Cutthroat Trout! Salmon fry are popping in a good majority of your local streams and Cutthroat are on the move looking for the next meal. Imitating these Salmon fry are possible with flies and lures, and both techniques can be just as effective as the other.

For flies, epoxy minnows, tied down minnows, Joe's minnow, and many more "fry patterns" will be your go-to's. Casting lures and spinners, you will want to focus on 3/16oz Gibbs Crocs in variations of Silver and Gold, as well as Blue Fox Vibrax spinners in Size 0 & 1, as well as Panther Martins.

Saltwater Chinook

Local Saltwater fishing has been quite consistent as of late, and fish are continuously being caught off of the Hump, and even still into parts of Howe Sound. Fishing will generally transition to the Hump area and over towards Thrasher Rock / Gabriola here in the near future. Pesca Spoons in the 3.5" to 4.0" Variety, Glow or UV Hootchies in White or Pearl, and Anchovies are all solid bets.

Lakes (Interior & Local)

Well it may only be Mid-April, but lake fishing is already in full swing for Local Lakes and even a good amount of Interior Lakes.

Local Lakes to try:

Como Lake
Lafarge Lake
Sasamat Lake
Buntzen Lake
Rice Lake
Alouette Lake
Kawkawa Lake
Mike Lake

Interior Lakes such as Tunkwa, Stump, and Peterhope have all been fishing very well from reports and things will only get better and better as the weather warms up, lakes turn over, and more lakes become iced-off.
