help identify old lure?
« on: January 27, 2016, 02:18:24 PM »

This lure is marked LC (in script) 4 Pats.Pend.

I don't think it is a Lucky Craft, anyone have any ideas?

I spent about an hour looking through some of my books and even did a google image search. Unfortunately, nothing came up.
Based on the info I could gather, it seems to be an antique hand-made trolling spoon. The engraved letters L.C. are likely the initials of the maker.

Nice find. Very unusual ridges.

UPDATE: Take a look at the Encyclopedia of Old Fishing Lures: Made in North America by Robert A. Slade.

Volume 10 has what seems to be your lure (only size 3) on the cover!!!

Phew! And to think that I almost gave up. :o

Excellent work, I must have spent a few hours looking myself.
I see the lure has a patent number, unlike mine which is patent pending...I may be able to trace the maker through the number.

Thanks!!

Looking at the complete patent I find out that Joseph Cyril La Chance, the patent holder of the lure is from Vancouver!

Perfect. I am glad you traced it down to the smallest detail.
Now proudly place it in your display cabinet or donate it to a fishing museum. Sadly, the BC Fishing Museum on Granville Island is no longer...:(

Ya, that was John Keith King's endevour.
It was very cool.
Almost had to wear a bib in there(drool) for his reel collection alone.

I haven't fished the salt chuck in decades and I suspect it wouldn't do well on my 5 weight trolling Crown Lake :-) and my float tube won't go fast enough!!

I have a bunch of old lures, Gibbs, McMahon, Wonder, TMack and some others.  I will try to find the right home for them.
