Hey I'm just wondering about this blank Sage GSH2106 I know it's on the lighter side but could it handle the odd spring or chum?

I have a GSH2106 and they can handle Chum and Springs just fine.  It is a pretty strong rod.  I was using mine for chum and never felt out gunned.  It's a great blank.

If it's similar to the current 2106 blank (mine is the CT 2106), then it will handle the odd spring/chum just fine in moderate sized rivers like the Vedder, Stave, Squamish, etc.  Fraser, not so much...

I bought a CT 2106 two years ago largely based on the advice of ppl on this forum (FFM and others). I have caught a LOT of chum, springs, coho, pinks and so on with this rod and can offer some feedback.

First off it is a wonderfully light and awesome rod to fish with! My favorite reel pairing is a Shimano Currado 301E. Balances perfectly. Also like it with a Calcutta 201E although this reel struggles a bit with the drag for chum and springs. Most of the time I fish the Currado.

I have no problem landing any fish with this rod in the LOWER Vedder. I have landed 25+lb springs and so on. You definitely need to hammer the hook sets on any hook above #1. I often fish 1/0 jigs for chum and when the float goes under I L-A-Y into the hook set! If I'm fishing smaller hooks for coho and pinks a "regular" hook set is fine.

If I'm fishing upriver (don't much) I'll bring a beefier rod. Same with the Fraser/Harrison, I'll leave it at home and bring more beef. Plus I don't really like having such a nice rod in the boat in case it gets stepped on etc. Use the cheaper Shimano rods for that.

So, I would highly recommend this rod if you like fishing light gear. However if you're going to put a 400 Calcutta or some big reel on it then I would not bother. Also definitely not a rod for a novice fisherman. I let my wife use it and she feels it's way underpowered for chum and springs. She prefers to fish her 11"6 Technium in 12-25lb line rating, and this rod will haul in any salmon no problem. After fishing the 2016 most of the time this rod feels like an anchor! ???

"Sage" advice Spawn Sack! :)  My 2106 is my go to coho/steelhead rod.  I too have a Shimano Technium that I use when targeting red springs in the mid to upper Chilliwack river, or when fishing the Fraser for sox (WHEN there's an opening for sox).  The Technium is a good rod - very powerful.  It gives me a chance to turn big fish in big/fast water.  But it is a telephone pole compared to the Sage - no question!

Back to the OP's question.  I think the 2106 will be fine for the odd spring/chum as I mentioned before, but I wouldn't use it as my primary rod for those species.

This blank is my "go to" when I'm heading out. I have 3 rods built on this blank (1 level wind and 2 CP). I have caught Pinks / Coho / Chum / Springs / Steelhead on this blank.

If I'm specifically targeting a heavier fish (Spring / Chum), on a larger river, I'll use a 3106.

The 2016 is a great blank.

And remember.
The breaking point should be your leader; not your rod.
(I usually use 6# - 10# test)
Worst situations, point your rod at the fish and snap it off if it finds the fast water and you're losing control.

Are you talking about the 2106L, or the heavier more muscular 2106?  Totally different rods...

The GSH 2106lb brown blank

I will not use this blank for chum or springs over 15 lb.

Either way it's a good thing I won't run into any spring or chum anytime soon

Ya, I wouldn't necessarily target springs and chum with this rod, but there is a little bit of onus on the operator.

But mine has handled them fine when targeting Coho.

Also, because it's more sensitive/softer you might have to be a little quicker on the draw for a good hook set.

The GSH 2106lb brown blank
That's what I thought. When I fished that's what I used, is what I would recommend for an all round float rod, and is the blank most used by old time local anglers.  Awesome rod for the C-V, but was not designed for 30-40 lb Chinooks. As Fish or cut bait correctly states, there is certainly some skill needed for larger fish but, imo, the light weight and elegance far outweighs the chance of hooking something it can't handle.
