Tiny jigs for pinks
« on: July 18, 2015, 12:29:17 PM »

at the store today to buy some more hooks for pink flies and figured I'd grab some very small jig hooks and tie them up for my kids to use.

I got 1/16" bead sized jigs in chartreuse and I'm wondering if anyone has a really good "go to" jig pattern for pinks. I want to stay away from big poofy materials like marabou, rabbit and the such. Stream lined and mediumly sparsed flies I find work best. I may just copy one of my fly patterns into a jig pattern

Thank you

Hi Hook
the idea of the jig as you know is to have the material create the action, so don't go too sparse ;)

But when it comes to pinks they do tend to be too fussy so long as its pink color :-\

I am sure you and your kids will have fun with them pinks
I am hoping to get out Tuesday and chuck some of my flies 8)

one of the flies that has been effective for me uses small or extra small dumbbell eyes, a turn or 2 of wooly buggy style marabou and 6 or so strands of flashabou type material in silver pearl or gold. Marabou slims down when wet so in the water the pattern looks more eel like than 'poofy'. It jigs nicely too. I use a slow relatively long pull followed by a pause.

Kids barely gave the jigs a chance but they did get fish on them. They rather bring in fish on my fly rod  :)

PS - best flies have been greenish patterns for us lately

^^^ my experience also.

Try flies or small jigs with nothing more than a couple of wraps of olive or dark olive chenille with the UV dye (with small brass bead for the flies)   ;)

Love the long slow pull followed by the 2-3 second pause, then the big hit as you pick the fly up again.  It sure is the drug.
