Stillwater flies - When the fish are off the bite
« on: April 13, 2015, 10:38:46 AM »

Hi,

I was looking for a few  trout flies to tie when the fish aren't hitting the usual chironomids, micro leeches etc.

Maybe something to get them to strike out of aggression?

Thanks!

Boobies & Blobs (fish with fast retrieves), Vampire Leeches, Pumpkinheads, woolly buggers, any searching pattern really.

Dark green/olive bugger or equivalent in olive uv chenille, with a brass bead head, is pretty much my go to.

Bigger buggers and boobies. Fish aggressive parterns and cover some water. I love bigger olive buggers, black with some orange grisley hackle, patters in maroon and there's a fly parern called the "Bulldog" that they use on Sport Fishing On The Fly you should check out.

it's interesting, watching sport fishing on the fly and how often they use the "bulldog"  I have tried that fly on various systems here in the lower mainland and couldn't get a bite.  switch to the ol pumpkin head or wooly bugger and the fish will hit that.

boobies work great though, just like the advice above says.  strip it in fairly fast and hold on.

Don't forget the bigger black or burgundy leech patterns. Killer stripped on the fast sinking line.
