Stamp River - Good News for Hatchery Brood Program
« on: January 09, 2015, 09:50:53 AM »

From the reports this year so far, you can see that guests have been getting some nice Steelhead on their trips.

The water has been a great height and guests have been getting a good mix of Hatchery and wild fish.  Murphy guests with the help of their guides have been pitching  in for decades to help get the Wild Captive Steelhead Brood Stock needed to maintain the hatchery Steelhead program on the Stamp river. This year the contribution to this program has been going much better than the past five years and it simply because of abundance.

The goal is about 30 summer runs and fifty winter runs.  We are half way to the winter run target and summer run target was captured this fall.  This is great news for the future fisheries.

If you recall in the past three year winter run targets were tough to meet, while this year it looks like the targets will be easily met with with a good diversity from Dec, Jan and Feb. Previous years it has mostly been February and March and hard work to get them.

Considering the history on run timing we will probably see the bulk of the hatchery fish coming a little later.

If you want to get a Steelhead on your bucket list this looks like a good year to make that happen.  We have trips available starting Jan 18th, the short notice trips have been filling in quickly with the current conditions being ideal. And if your lucky and get a wild one there is a good chance you will be able to help "tube" it and contribute the live fish to the hatchery program!

See the weather report and river levels graph on our report page for current conditions and details.
