Tidal Fraser River- Bar Fishing
« on: October 13, 2014, 04:51:35 PM »

I have a question- I have been out barfishing
The lower Fraser. It indeed looks like it's picking
Up. However my pencil lead seems to get
Stuck in the silty bottom and with applied
Pressure it eventually let's go. I have used everything down
From 1.75 ounces down to a little less than 1 ounce.
Just wondering if this effects hook set. As when I go to jerk the hook it is locked
Into the bottom.

I have also been using roe skien pieces, big and small does size matter when it comes to
This matter

I use a pyramid style weight about 2-3oz and rarely have any issues.

I use roe sacs when bar fishing as to avoid coarse fish.

It's also possible you may be casting over river grass that tangles up your weight but isn't strong enough to be a true snag. Try switching to the flat round weights or pyramids as suggested and see if it continues to hang up.

What setup are you guys using with the weights? Rod said he uses the 3 way siwivel but I get snags when casting from shore same goes for the t bar. I like putting the donut/circle weight sliding through mainline then bead to barrel swivel then my leader with hook. Is this OK does somebody have better idea?

I use the t bar or spreader bar and a shorter leader 6"-1' and about 18" to the weight.
Heavier line helps as well to keep the presentation floating straight.
This isn't a problem because of the poor clarity of the tidal Fraser, which yesterday looked to be 3".

I use the 3-way swivel setup as Rod suggested. A 3 ounce pyramid sinker connected directly via a snap to one end of the swivel and a 2-3 foot leader with the hook connected to the other end (via snap). The 3rd end of the 3-way is tied to the main line (20 lb). I used to attach the sinker to the swivel with a short piece of lighter line (15 lb) as a 'sacrificial link'- if the sinker gets snagged on the bottom, it will be first to break off, leaving the rest of my tackle intact. However the downside of this approach is that I sometimes get tangles/line twist with both sinker and hook leaders.
