Had a blast Crabbing this past Sunday at Barnet Marine Park. Caught a couple but both were just a couple mm's too small to keep. Oh well. Just being out on the water was great. Decided to attach my GoPro onto my homemade depth checker and came back with some cool images of what is hiding on the bottom. A few unexpected shots!

We had it down around 70' and were in the water for about 1.5 hours.

Thanks. Even at 70' the camera is capturing quite a bit of light, especially for this time of the year when water is a bit more turbid. Did you brighten the images up or are those raw ones coming straight off the card?

Sorry - we had the trap around 70' - these pics were from around 40'. I had a glowstick attached to it to provide a little bit of light but didn't need it at all. I was blown away with the amount of light down there and the brightness of the pics, and I didn't even have the GoPro on the low light setting. No colour corrections have been done on these - this is direct from the card.

I attached my camera to my homemade depth checker (broken Coho Killer rod, a mooching reel, some thick braided line and a weight) and sent her down. I'm in the process of building a much more awesome unit with LED's that should shine the light on a few more cool underwater environments.

You should be seeing some pretty cool images this summer and fall if all goes as planned!

Even at 40' is very impressive. That was actually my next question, if the low light setting was on or not. Doesn't look like it needed it. If it was on, it'd make the images brighter but also grainier so this works out well.

I was actually shooting some underwater video yesterday, at 8' of water so will show that in a bit for comparison.

Deepest I've been in BC was around 120' and again, had a light, could still see plenty. It depends a lot on the time of the year, better vis in the winter and gets a bit crap in the summer with algal blooms and freshet. You'd be surprised how much is down there !

Yeah I don't doubt you can see quite a bit at that depth, the problem with the underwater filming is mostly the camera's inability to capture bright enough images with the amount of light available.

Allmost looked like a fishing game.
There are some great youtube videos of crabbing.
There was one where a Crab tried to get into the trap for 14 minutes I think it was and couldn't find the way in.

I put my go pro in one of my traps at ambleside, had it soaking for 2 hours. Pulled it up and there was not a single crab inside.  Watched the footage, and 3 seala were basically flipping my trap all over the place. Too bad I didnt see anythig but pop cans and chip wrappers. Try tossing the go pro at belcarra park !
