Crab question
« on: November 16, 2013, 03:32:08 PM »

Does crab need to be cooked the day you catch it? or can you leave it till the next day, if you leave it in water?

Thanks, Dave

I would cook it the day you catch it. I would find it very hard to keep the crab alive more than 1 day.

I would cook it the same day unless events prevent you from doing so. In that case I would clean the crab, keep it on ice and cook it the next day.

Use newspaper to wrap it and put in refrigerator. I keep them in a refrigerator drawer. I cover them with damp newspaper. They will be live for 3-4 days. They need two important things: moisture and air.

When you get them at the water, You can wrap them with newspaper. They do not like fresh water. They will die sooner in freshwater.

I tried that before and I'm so surprised they are still alive over night.  Whenever I put the live crab in fresh water when I get home, they are dead within hours.

Did anyone try this with any success? I'm looking to give this a go this weekend after having some die in the bucket of sea water I had (presumably through suffocation of lack of oxygen in the water).  Do you just leave the crabs loose in the fridge draw with damp newspaper on them? I don't think that the missus would love that surprise!  ;D

I always wrap crabs in newspapers and put them he fridge when I don't cook them on that day. I have had them survive for a whole 5 days in there.

Peel all meat and vacuum pack with a little lime juice. Awesome crab cakes and will keep in freezer for a month.
