A little off topic on the closure but all of the talk on the T got me thinking back to early steelheading days in the early 80's and I remember the Sockeye running in the Thompson in last week of October or first week of November at Spences Bridge. We would have one to three sockeye by catch a week if short floating gooeybobs. And we would see them swimming by all day long hugging the shoreline.

Not sure where these fish were going but it seemed they were to late to be Adams river fish since they had already gone thru to be spawning in the Adams by mid to late October. The weird thing was 1987 was the last year we ever saw a sockeye in late October early November and I have fished the river every year until the first closure and never saw one since. If they were a late Adams river run they just completely disappeared which is weird because there should be a run for every year of their four year cycle but we didn't see them again after 1987.

When did anybody say the Thompson was closed because of the snaggers?

i think hes referring to the other threads where flossers were being blamed for getting the fraser closed. his point (i think) is that their are not many flossers on the thompson and it still got shut down.

One answer I received.

Hi Chris, the closure on the Thompson is due to the lack of available
TAC for Summer run sockeye. At this time we are not going to meet
escapement goals for this run size and actions are being taken in all
fisheries to reduce / eliminate the impact on sockeye. Although the
chinook fishery in the Thompson is a low impact fishery on sockeye it is
not a zero impact therefore the closure has been implemented.

First Nations fisheries that are highly selective like dip nets, fish
wheels and rod and reel remain open for the retention of chinook and
pink salmon.

Drove by today and last night very little F/N activity but saw them haul in a chinook that went home as it is legal for them.

Reports of lots of jacks, sorry to be sitting on the bank but did get a rainbow up river with a blade, only fished 30 minutes. Took a drive up the West side of the river towards Boston Bar, was nice, picked a few wild apples from an abandoned farm.
Spent one night at Nathatatlatch Lakes, serious thunder storm, saw a few fish jump, lakes glacier water colored, nice area.

Not sure if we will get a T. opening, very poorly managed. Have a meeting Friday morning to discuss the recent closures on the Fraser as well with 2 key people, things have to change or our recreational fishery in going to be in bad shape for the future. :'(

It will be fine, thanks, except the thousands of pinks will be in the way crowding out the jacks. ::)
