Things have really turned around in our local Vancouver waters. We have seen a couple of our local fisheries really develop over the last week. The West Vancouver shoreline is kicking out some decent numbers of coho salmon, the odd chinook salmon, and the odd early pink salmon. Howe Sound has really perked up as well with some some nice chinook up to 30 pounds, hatchery coho and increasing numbers of pink salmon. Now that we are enjoying some good fishing locally, we have not bothered crossing over to the Gulf Islands this week!
The West Vancouver shoreline has been producing fish all the way from Point Atkinson down to the Mouth of the Capilano River. Now that the Capilano River is down to a trickle, the coho salmon that continue to roll into Vancouver Harbour will stay in the ocean and not enter the river. White hootchies, small gypsy spoons, anchovies and small pink/red Gibbs hockey sticks work well for coho, chinook, and pink salmon along the West Vancouver shoreline. Productive depths have been from 20-50 feet.
Howe Sound has had a surprisingly good number of hatchery coho, lots of jack chinook, some nice chinook as expected and some early Squamish River bound pink salmon. Anchovies and bigger Gibbs and Silver Horde spoons in the 3.5 to 4.0 sizes have been working. The fish go on and off the bite in Howe Sound and persistence is the key to success. Productive depths have been a little deeper with 40 to 100 feet working best.
We are a few weeks away from the Howe Sound light tackle pink salmon fishery. In late July big schools of pink salmon will stack up along various beaches in Howe Sound. It is a great fishery for kids and those who like to spin cast or fly fish for salmon. It is a pretty amazing experience casting to schools of jumping fish in a spectacular setting! With our boats we are able to access some remote boat access only spots. Give us a call if you are interested. Prime time will be from July 27th to August 12th. We have fly rods and spinning rods.
Fraser River sturgeon fishing was also really good on the weekend. Our guide Luke had some great fishing with some impressive numbers of sturgeon landed on the Lower Fraser River. Now that the Fraser River is dropping, fishing is very consistent. Our jet boat is only 15 to 20 minutes from downtown Vancouver by car and only 15 minutes away by the Canada Line. If you are staying in downtown Vancouver, our sturgeon fishing is so convenient!
