Chilliwack River, March 7th & 8th 2013
« on: March 11, 2013, 07:08:28 PM »

Hi guys just got my full member status so i'm a couple days late with the report.  Had a couple awesome days 5 fish in total for the two days 3wild 2hatchery.  On thursday landed 2 within 10minutes.  Fish had sea lice on them and absolute chromers. With the new moon upon us and large tide swings i think its safe to say these fish are just riding that big tide.  Should have a couple more really good days in the near future because of this.  Tight lines All  !!!!!

Thanks for the report. Are you fishing jigs under a float? Have you found jigs performed better than other stuffs? I got my latest fish on a single Jenson egg due to the clear water after changing up a few bigger stuffs like worm and spinners.

I was tossing everthing jensens, roe, roe pattern, spinners, rubber worms,......just happened to have a jig tipped with prawn when lady luck smiled upon me, so I stayed with it....a young fella i met on the river that day saw me fighting the wild from up river and came down to see me and by the time he got there i had the hatchery on.  I told him what i was using and three casts later he was into a beauty wild doe, i left and apparently he got into another and the following day as well.  His fish had sea lice as well.

So did he switch to a jig too? I can see a jig can out perform if you put some action to the jig (like the bass guys do by jerking the rod tip when retrieving). But how do you give the jig any action when fished under a float with a dead drift?

The jig pulses in the water. Very important to have that float standing on end. If you have any tension on the line the jig will streamline and not be very effective. Usually I don't bother tipping a jig as I find them just as deadly without. I also always use a loop knot to give it more action. I always fish a jig very short and an even shorter leader.
Give them a shot. Keep the jig on for an outing or 2 you might be surprised.

One last question. If you don't tip a jig, it is basically a hook with a lead at the top. So how does it attract a fish (unless the lead portion is coloured like a corky)? I will try put a tube grub with tentacles for pusating action. Shrimp or prawn is nice but hard to stay on the hook for long. Do you find you need something to hold it down?

The pulsating marabou feathers attracts the fish.

Sometimes I paint the jig heads with nail polish. I've caught fish with bare lead jig heads though. When people tip with Shrimp, they ususally use a small piece  the size of a thumb nail and thread it through the core of the shrimp. Another idea I got from one of Bent Rods jigs is to put on a 2" or so chunk from your old pink worms that you're going to chuck anyways.
Bent Rods jigs are great for steelhead and are my favourite jig I can find this side of the border.
Short float and they last forever. These things are rock magnets.

All my jigs have marabou feathers. Very simple to tie your own, or buy them pre-made
