I took some newbies fishing at low tide from the shore of the Capilano in the early afternoon on Sunday.  I would have preferred to go first thing on the incoming tide, but people needed sleep.  There were also a couple of guys fly fishing from a boat 10 meters from the mouth, and one more boat trolling outside the light/reef.

Nothing was caught.  Not even a nibble.  This week I am going to try to hit first light.

What was interesting was being verbally accosted by a 50 year old (or so) female who asked us not to fish lest we snag a bird; specifically a duckling.  She was dressed like a typical West Vancouver housewife with a camera that had to be worth a few grand.  Now I have no issue with anyone saying whatever they want to say, but she went on and on and on.  We explained our rights politely and that we respected her opinion.  Then she started asking me how many birds I had snagged, how she had seen birds being snagged by lashing lures and said she was going to take pictures of us fishing because it was her right. 

Anyways, be warned that you may encounter her.  She is harmless...just annoying.

Hahah, thats pretty funny, I can totally picture her, camera in hand, going on and on... should have told her to move or become accidentally snagged!

She went a bit overboard but her concern does have some merit, she is just barking up the wrong tree. The sight of a water fowl (or any animal) being tangled in fishing line  is not very pleasant at all and too often new anglers (not suggesting paddy is) seem to tune out the presence of birds. Last weekend at Rice Lake's family fishing day. We watched people continuously casting toward a family of ducks that were confused by all the activities. Before we had a chance to say anything to these people, one duckling was hooked and I wouldn't blame anyone if they decided to quit fishing for life right there. My guess is that the woman has been hanging out with the real housewives of Vancouver too often, but she probably also has seen a similar incident that motivated her to speak out.

That doesn't sound pretty. Personally I haven't hooked a bird, but they have flown into my line before (and just sort of tumble a bit and fly away)

Kind of off topic but... speaking of Real Housewives of Vancouver.. I saw Jodie's hummer get spat on on Robson St. last weekend

I've had the pleasure to untangle line from seagulls three times. Once on the Squamish and that was an easy job. Once in Steveston and luckily it was early in the morning so there were no one around to see the nastiness. That took a bit more effort to untangle while the bird bit me repeatedly. It happens, just try to avoid casting toward where birds are flying or swimming around. What's even more important is to keep discarded lines off the water. Nothing aggravates me more than seeing a birdnest being tossed away by people who seem to think lines can magically evaporate in air.

That was my buddy and I.  We tried a few spots.  No fish spotted.  That lady sounds like she has issues.  It's not like you guys were casting into a flock of birds.

Yeah she does! It was hilarious! Me and my friend were standing behind her hummer while I was looking up a picture of Jodie on my phone b/c he didn't believe it was her. Some lady pushing a stroller walks up and asks if we're looking at porn. ( Probably cause we were huddled behind this nice hummer peering at a phone). Anyways, we tell her what we're actually looking at and she walks right up and spits on the window. One of the most unreal things I have ever seen

Rod, I have once freed a seagull from fishing line (not mine).  It is easy to stop the bird from biting you, just cover its head with something dark so it can't see.  The bird also calms down.

I had a seagull tangle with my line at the Keith Road Pool a couple of years ago.  I was trying to get closer so I can free him but he kept trying to run away and flew on top of that fallen log.  Luckily another angler was closer to the seagull and he covered its eyes and un-wrapped the line from its leg.  The seagull still bit him, but didn't draw any blood.  I don't think I can fish in that spot again, ever because I can only go on weekends, and this year people are fishing 3 feet apart from 3am to 10pm.

I was out there at the mouth with my kayak on Sunday fly fishing. there was no sign of any fish there.
The currents there during tide changes are very strong and it made paddling very tedious. I was fighting the current most of the time while anchoring would help.

Comments on where and how to fly fish in the Cap would be much appreciated..

Is it true those ducks are really good Barbequed? Is there a size limit? Is it catch and release only? More info would be greatly appreciated. Pluck you too! Quit fowling around!
