Lafarge Lake, May 5th 2012
« on: May 06, 2012, 11:31:47 AM »

Went to Lafarge Lake yesterday for a few hours. I tried shrimp, powerbait, and spinner all around the lake. No love for me, but I see someone with powerbait under a float catch two. Overall, it was very slow. Anybody else have any action?

The locals have it cleaned out in about 15  days. :P

The thought that the lake gets cleaned out few days after each stocking always comes up every year and I've always said that ain't really the case. Yes, fishing indeed becomes slower, but there are still plenty of (smarter) fish in the lake.

I was there yesterday (May 6th) just walking around for a couple of hours with the long spinning rod. The bites were not steady, but every 10 minutes or so a fish would fall for the lure. The challenge at Lafarge Lake is only the middle part is quite deep, where most fish are. To catch them consistently, you gotta be fishing pretty far out. I usually focus on having the spoon working properly out deep and quickly reel it in through the shallow water and recast so time is not wasted on where the fish are not.

I was out just over a week ago for a few hours on Saturday and did pretty well with the fly rods.  I can think of two advantages with the float tube and fly rods.  First - access.  With a float tube, you can access parts of the lake that the shore fishers can't.  Second - flyfishing.  Sure these trout are pellet fed.  But once they acclimatize to the lake, they start to get a bit more selective.  What I love about trout flies is that they imitate exactly what trout eat in the wild.  You have to know your entomology, and present the fly under the right conditions.

I like to use my clear intermediate sinking line to search out a lake.  I can do a very slow troll and present a leech, Carey, doc spratley, or other searching pattern.  I'll mix up my retrieve to entice a bite.  I also carry a second rod with a full floating line and a chironomid.  I found that the trout at Lafarge have a hard time resisting a well presented chironomid.  Thanks to Hook, I know which chironomid pattern works very well in that lake... ;)  Anyway, nice to get in a little practice for the interior lakes.  Now that is a quality fishery!  I just hope I can go this Spring...

And yes, the lake may get fished out over time.  I think this is more of an issue for the shore guys tossing bait.  What few trout remain can get pretty selective.  I did get a chance to chat with some nice guys on the shore who showed me a thing or two about bait.  I'm hoping to take my daughter out when she's old enough, and I'll have to put the fly rods away for a bit.

I also ran into a couple of buddies - one being Britguy.  Good to run into you out there!

I wonder if the FFSBC is going to stock it again soon?  I guess when they do, we'll have plenty of gullible trout to hook for a while... :)

do a search for fly patterns i have listed on this site, you will come across 2 that i have put up with full recipes and tying instructions. these are my go to patterns if i hit an urban lake, they are both chironomid patterns  ;D

Those fish in that lake come very close to shore. Even casting out 10 feet from shore I have gotten fish, its amazing. Green leaches and Christmas Tree's seem to be the most productive. Fly fishing from shore is fairly easy, then again, a float tube would be much better. Float fishing with power bait and shrimp work great. Like I said, Ive cast out a float and caught fish right by the shoreline. Wedding bands and little spoons are a lot of fun. Fishing with a bubble and a fly can outfish bait sometimes.

I agree with Rod here
I used to think that they were all getting fined out, but after fishing there over the past few years i have learned how to find the fish
sure a lot of fish get caught not long after being stocked but the rest just find other food to eat (insects)
I tend to switch from chronnies  (Hooks specials with my own twist) to green woolly buggers, black leeches etc stripped or just trolled
FFM and I were switching back and forth that day and we did pretty good (nice to se you too buddy)
The fish also move around and you will see them rising in small schools
there are some hot spots that work for the shore guys and the tubers, you just need to put the time in to find them ;)
most of the guys on the lake are willing to share what flies\ bait work, you just need to ask

I noticed a big otter in there last time out, i am sure he is eating a few fish, plus the Osprey does well
love that the wildlife is thriving in a inner city lake

That osprey is probably the worst predator ever lol... I've never seen it catching a fish when it pounds the water. ;D

Good point guys.  The osprey and (possibly) the otter will aslso spook fish.  Just a bit more added pressure on the fish.  Funny thing is, I've never seen an osprey or otter there in the past, so there must be a fair number of fish in there for those predators to be there.

I was out there today and the otter just seemed to be eating small items, most likely crawfish as there are lots in there

as for the Osprey i did see it get a fish one day , only problem was it was on the end of some guys fly line
sure did give him a shock when it hit the water right in front of him :o

It was slow today so I headed off to Buntzen for a few hours, Rod and Nina were just heading out as I was heading in
got lots of hits on sinking line with green wholly bugger but none to the net
tried chronnies but just a bit too breezy and i did not have an anchor

No probs
I could see you were busy getting your motor mounted
I was going to have a chat with you after i brought my car back but you were out there by then
sure wish i had a small boat , just sold my pontoon , to much work putting together as i have no where to store one while put together
I just bought the fat cat to hit the small lakes, fits in my car semi inflated and store away that way too

There was a guy fishing from the dock when i got there and i noticed he was using two rods
he hooked and landed two fish so i kindly reminded him that he could get a fine and loose his gear
he said he was just testing two types of bait to see which one worked, I said that was not allowed
he left not long after that :-\

This is a great lake to fish, lots of space to get away from the crowds ;D
and lots of friendly folks out there fishing
