Fisheries minister eyeing staff cuts

  The minister of fisheries and oceans says his department could soon reduce its workforce of 14,000 employees across Canada.

Keith Ashfield stressed in an interview with the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal that his department has to operate more like a business. "What we're trying to do is modernize the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and at the same time help fishers," said Ashfield. "You know there's a lot of bureaucracy that perhaps isn't needed. We need to look and focus more on our core mandate rather than some things we may have been doing in the past. Things tend to grow exponentially, without you even realizing it."

Seems to me that bureaucracy is at the senior level ie. Regional and Headquarters. They should start there.

He's talking about industries like land developers, aquaculture, commercial harvesters and maybe First Nations regulating themselves rather than having government oversight to ensure they meet harvest quotas and management and environmental standards. That's the "bureacracy" the Conservatives are talking about eliminating in all departments. Putting the foxes in charge of the chicken coop. Us sporties aren't even in the equation.
