This I don't understand-how can a fish add weight when it's stopped feeding?

Please explain.

I missed that one LOL

mr.p where do you get the idea that salmon feed once they hit freshwater? Please enlighten us.

Hump, milt and roe add weight.
Notice how the world record pinks are caught in freshwater...not salt...

I think others were not questioning that biggest pink salmon are found in freshwater, but rather your suggestion that pink salmon feed in freshwater, which is probably a misunderstanding.

Pink salmon, like all other Pacific salmon species, feed as much as they can prior to entering their natal streams. At this stage, it makes them the fattest during the entire life, so they can extract energy from their body to complete the upstream journey. During the in-river stage, no feeding occurs as the abdominal cavity space is taken up by milt sacs and eggs. As they move upstream, their body weight starts to decline steadily as that energy is being harvested from body fat.

The conspicuous hump, which is only developed in males, is what biologists call sexual dimorphism, which separates the males and females at the spawning stage and plays a role in spawning success. Similar phenomena are found in other salmon species, fang-like teeth on male chum salmon is a good example. I am not familiar with the exact physiological process of this development, but my guess would be that it is influenced by hormones.

I have also heard another theory for the hump development .... males are much more likely to be captured by predators in fresh water.  Invariably when you see a picture of a male pink in a bears mouth, the teeth are in it's back.  I thought is was an interesting survival strategy; or maybe just coincidence :)

Well, it seems I've answered my own question.

I saw a big school in the Lower Fraser (Triangle Road / Deas Island Park) today. They were porpoising their way up stream, with the odd jumper.

Any guess where these fish are heading? Maybe the Harrison or the Thompson? Definitely too early for the Vedder, but Mother Nature could make me a liar.

What time was that? Pretty early to be seeing pinks coming in but I have seen the odd small schools in past early August. None of the Fraser test fisheries have captured any pinks yet. I was going to say that maybe they were sockeye, but if they were porpoising close to shore, then they were likely to be pinks.

Based on 2009 numbers and current test fisheries, I am estimating the bulk of the run in the lower river starting August 23rd.

They look about a week early.

Took a drive out to Cates, mouth of the Cap and Furry Creek tonight for something to do. Had my gear in the vehicle but I didn't see a fish... Talked to a few guys at each and no fish.

Is it just me or are the "dog signs" at Cates really messed up and contradicting each other?
