Beginner seeking help...
« on: July 14, 2011, 09:26:58 AM »

Just starting out with my 10 year old son...tried to fish a few times but not really knowing what I am doing.  Does anyone have any suggestions on:

Where to go (we are in the Tri-cities area)?
What we need (we have basic spinning reels/rods)?
What to use for bait?
When to go?

and any other 'friendly' advice would be welcomed.  I am really hoping to get him catching something (rather than our typical, cast, reel in and get nothing but a few weeds)...

Thanks!

Jay:
good questions, please search the Fishingwithrod website for a lot of your questions.

Depending on what you are fishing for, some good spots might be:
Lafarge lake or Como Lake in Coquitlam for Trout
Alouette River in Pitt Meadows/ Maple Ridge.  Make sure you check the regulations.
Sasamat lake near Ioca.
Mike lake near Maple Ridge
Sturgeon Slough in Maple ridge is good for kids:  Check out  Rannie Road/Ladner road  area or east on Ladner Road.

When fishing don't be afraid to ask people you see what they are using and how they are fishing.  I never fished trout in the past and every time I go to Lafarge lake i learn something new.

Some other great places to go w/ kids are listed on Rod's site in Richmond.  Road 2 and 3 Piers.

Good luck.

In Coquitlam, I'd suggest two lakes where you can start out at.

Lafarge Lake: http://www.fishingwithrod.com/articles/region_two/lafarge_lake.html

Como Lake: http://www.fishingwithrod.com/articles/region_two/como_lake.html

Both lakes were just stocked with more rainbow trout last week, so fishing should be good, especially when this week's weather is somewhat cool.

As for how to fish for them, please take a look at:

Good point about GoFishBC's L2F program Skaha. The society has actually expanded its L2F program this year and it is currently happening at quite a few different lakes. Go to http://gofishbc.com/learntofish/default.htm and scroll down to the bottom, you'll find when and where they are taking place. In fact, there's one at Lafarge Lake today! Call the phone number on that page to find out whether you need to sign up, or simply show up.

if you have a boat, i'd suggest buntzen lake and trolling (a red wedding ring and worms). that almost always catches trout and kokanee there.

if from shore, then como or lafarge lakes are a good bet. worms and sinkers, let it sit on the bottom until you feel a tug.

if you want to try salt-water, try the dock at belcarra (or any of the rocky outcroppings) with worms and sinkers. :) you'll likely get perch and flounder and a few other interesting creatures. best of luck :)
