Having a discussion about sockeye fishing with the outlaws and my understanding was it was closed for a period before it was opened in the 90's to sporties.  Does anyone know what the history of this is?

It was through the efforts of The Fraser Valley Salmon Society that was able to get all speciies opportunities open on the Fraser River in starting in the 1990's.

Prior to that sockeye pink and chum were considered 'commercial' species and never open for sport fishing in fresh water.
