All of my kids started as soon as they were old enough to hold a rod, about 3 yrs. My eldest daughter was 4 on her first "real fishing" trip to Roche Lake with her dad and grandpa in May. Her 15 pound chum on the Stave has been her go to fish story for the last few years. She is now 11 and has started fly fishing. My younger two have not yet had that defining moment so they are not as eager although each has had their success with perch and coarse fish, and my youngest did have a couple of big fish on his line at Roche but had lost them (including one that was so big it only fit half way into the small net we had at the time). You have to let them come to it on their own. Whenever you have a chance to get them into a fish, offer it. This plants the seed for later. After an unsuccessful trip, I would make a point to take them to the trout pond in Abbotsford as soon after as possible to get them catching fish, that way their memories of fishing will be of playing fish, instead of playing games in the boat while Dad fishes.
