--first couple of years great...kid in the basket asleep and you're fishin.
--then crawling and these few years fear of eating a hook or bait or crawling out of boat when you're sleeping... need help in the boat.
--several years of not really fishing just having fun in and around the water... swimming lessons in order... if no fun they will quite fishing.
--then might get interested to fish on their own and no holding back... offer as much freedome as you can as to type of fishing... may not be what you're interested in.
--expect they might leave it for a while but you've given them the basic skills to enjoy it if they wish now or in later life... they have to choose.

My boy will be 4 this summer and he will have his first official fishing trip on a warm sunny day in August trying for Fraser Pinks with his mom there as well as an extra set of eyes and definitely a life jacket.

I would like to tether him to a log, add a gps tracking device to him, have a search and rescue team waiting on call, and maybe a spy satellite watching his every move.

We tried once last summer but with the sharp hooks, the dead seal we found, and the glass and other crap on the beaches it didn't feel safe to me.

Trolled Kawakwa two Sundays ago, Just myself and 18 month daughter. 17' boat running an electric most of the time.  Ice cream pail  full of water w couple of squirt toys, in the boat she was happy. Gotta time it perfect though. ie: be ready the moment they wake up from nap, lunch packed ect. Granted she wasn't exactly watching the rod but she eagle eyed a couple of birds flying way up there and said hi to about every other passing boat. Last fall she trolled w myself and a friend for Coho in the Fraser w Mom a quick phone call away in case she lost interest. No phone call was needed. Life Jacket is on before she even gets let out of the truck and worn till she gets back in. Find one that fits well and they won't even care its on.  Good Luck.

i started fishing at 4, and caught my first fish by myself at 5, i would just sit in the boat and always wore a life jacket. started river fishing when i was 7 or 8 and always wore a life jacket untill i was 13. im 16 now and wear a vest for my gear and it has a pull cord on it to inflate, i use that for lakes. rivers i dont have anything except a wading belt cus i wear a wading jacket  :-\ oh and i always have a whistle tied to a loop on my coat or vest. had to use it a few times river fishing when i was just starting and my dad would go up or down river and i cudnt see him.

While they were in the boat earlier, I started both my daughters fishing at 2 and fly tying at 5.

I got my son into fishing when he was 4 years old. First fish he caught was an either  big Pea Mouth Chub or NPM I can not remember exactly. In his excitement, he asked me for my help. Priceless.

I started fishing at 5 up at pender harbour with my grandpa. My first fish was some sort of rock cod off the wharf extended out from the cabin. Back when you could use live herring as bait and treble hooks lol

All of my kids started as soon as they were old enough to hold a rod, about 3 yrs.  My eldest daughter was 4 on her first "real fishing" trip  to Roche Lake with her dad and grandpa in May.  Her 15 pound chum on the Stave has been her go to fish story for the last few years.  She is now 11 and has started fly fishing.  My younger two have not yet had that defining moment so they are not as eager although each has had their success with perch and coarse fish, and my youngest did have a couple of big fish on his line at Roche but had lost them (including one that was so big it only fit half way into the small net we had at the time).  You have to let them come to it on their own.  Whenever you have a chance to get them into a fish, offer it.  This plants the seed for later.  After an unsuccessful trip, I would make a point to take them to the trout pond in Abbotsford as soon after as possible to get them catching fish, that way their memories of fishing will be of playing fish, instead of playing games in the boat while Dad fishes.

My daughter landed her first trout at 2 years old (with Dad's help of course). She quickly learned the phrase "reel, reel, reel!!!!" That was more of a multi-family trip that happened to include some fishing. When she was 3 she went on her first real fishing trip with Dad. We camped overnight at a Princeton area lake. She loved it. She wants to do another trip for her birthday this year.
