I was fishing at deer lake today since its within walking distance of my new house and fished for a couple hours after work after I got word that they stocked it with fresh rainbows. So After about an hour of fishing at 6pm something hit hard and swallowed the hook. I reeled it in thinking its just another rainbow but I noticed that it was jumping out of the water as i reeled it in closer, I was kinda thinking it was a carp because it was splashing at the surface also. When i got it on the dock me and another two guys fishing next to said that it was a rare fish and could have been either a kokane or cutthroat trout. It was really silver in appearance with its mouth going past its eyes by 1cm.

Anyways here is the picture of the fish i caught today, can anyone tell what species this fish is?? ???

What kind of fish is this? ???

Cutthroat trout.

Just a reminder to others that if you cannot identify the species, please release it with care instead of killing it. In this case all species of trout can be kept at Deer Lake (regardless wild or hatchery marked) so it was not an issue, but the situation could be different in other fisheries.

I thought it could have been a kokane but was wrong.
I figured that it was either a cutthroat or kokane, but how do cutthroats get into deer lake when they dont stock em ever??

Thanks rod

What happened to the pic?

Deer lake connects to Burnaby lake by a small creek named Deer Brook, Burnaby lake is connected to the Brunette river which flows into the Fraser. If there are cutthroat in Deer lake they most likely came from the Brunette or Fraser river.

I thought maybe this was a late April Fools post.  ???

if you catch another fish you cannot identify will you:
a) eat it?
or
b) release it?
