Hook Eyes
« on: January 12, 2011, 05:38:38 PM »

Im confused on the style of eyes, tying dry flies should i tie them on a turned down style or straight style ? same with tying all flies nymphs wets,   Does the eye of the hook effect the way the fly moves in the water (streamers, nymphs etc) same goes for the hook set does the eye effect that as well ?

you will find that almost all trout hooks are down turned eyes (streamer, dries, scud/nymph hooks.....etc) and then you will notice that salmon/steelhead hooks are mostly upturned and most of your saltwater hooks have straight eyes.

I personally like to tie alot of my salmon patterns on straight eye (saltwater) hooks but all my trout patterns are on down turned eyes unless you buy straight eye nymph hooks for tying scuds, chironies or whatever (for example the Tiemco 2499SPBL )
