Tackle Bags
« on: August 01, 2010, 10:11:42 PM »

So I'm going fishing tomorrow and getting pretty excited. I have all my gear on my living room floor and have just decided that I want a tackle bag. What I picture is a back pack that isn't too big (I don't have a ton of stuff), that can make everything fairly organized. What I currently use is a regular backpack but it's fairly annoying as everything just clumps to the bottom.

Any suggestions out there?
Criteria:
Not too big..
Good organization setup..
Not too much money..

Any recommendations??

I find a backpack works well. I divide up my tackle into about three or four ziplock bags and find it easy to get at what I need.

Good to keep the gear you will need for a days fishing down to a minimum, we sometimes pack enough for a years fishing. ;D

I recently got one of those hip packs, so I'll be giving that a try. It's very well organized inside (lots of pockets and compartments). It will force me to carry less stuff, which is good as most of us tend to carry way too much tackle as Chris mentioned.
It's also waterproof.

I recently switched to a fanny pack style bag and it works great and it was $20 from Canadian tire.

Fanny packs? Really? Then as you say, I have way too much stuff.
My container of wool wouldn't fit in a fanny pack I don't think. It's about 5 x 3 with 12 colors in it.. Then I have another like that with pencil lead, hooks, corkies, swivels, beads etc.. Then floats, pliers, measuring tape.. The list goes on.
Too much stuff?

Something like these?

It really depends on how much you'd like to carry. Over the years I have cut down the amount of items that I choose to carry by laying everything out and deciding which ones I actually use a lot or don't actually use at all.

Back packs designed for snowboarders or backcountry skiers from MEC are good too if you want to carry a rod tube on your pack.

Rod tube!  Was going to mention that too.. The ones you posted are good, I'll check them out, thanks.
Great site Rod... I used to come in here in 2004/2005, was glad to see it's still here.

Thanks for the response.

I personally prefer a vest. It has big pockets that in addition to the usual fishing paraphernalia I can pack a lunch, a camera, rain gear and refreshments. Oh, it can also hold a fish.

Plano has a nice small carrying bag that comes with 4 tackle containers.I use one of the tackle containers for my gear, and the rest of the space for my lunch and drinks. The bag also has 3 zip-up compartments for other materials.Im very happy with it.....sure alot nicer then carrying a tackle box around.

Thanks everyone.. I saw some interesting ones when I was out today.
My backpack kept me pretty disorganized, so I will be looking around for something for sure.

I find most of us carry way too much stuff for a day of fishing.
Make a note of what you actually use when your out there and how much stuff actually just sits there day in and day out.
If your going through 5 lbs of lead a day then you need to either take up bowling or change your technique.
A film container of wool can last many days if not the whole winter season.
For the most part a jacket with some pockets is all that is needed but we fishermen are an insecure lot and wont leave anything at home because you just never know......... ;D
I used a fanny pack for years and for the most part they are excellent.
A light vest is pretty universal too.

Get a tackle box for barfishing/ bouncing/ lakes
get a vest for smaller river fishing, or a waist pack if you dont carry enough to fill a vest

I prefer waist pack, as Im usually out fishing for long hours and dont like to carry a bunch of weight on my shoulders the whole time.
