18 mins and lost a fish, time to heavy up your line and bring it in a little bit quicker. for the fishes sake.

That left side right side rod action when hes fighting the fish. I'm not familiar with that technique. Is there a reason for that?

I have been told that turning the rod on the side causes one of the gill plates to close tight making the fish "lose it's breath" faster.
This was for ocean caught fish but I'm sure the same principle applies to the river.

My guess would be that it was foul hooked, I hooked a 20+ pounder last year in a very fast moving section of the Vedder, and while it was a great battle it was still maybe four to five minutes total before I had it to hand.... this video does however show you how silly it sounds when people who post, talk about the twenty to thirty minute battles they have with fish, especially after seeing how long an 18-20 minute fight really takes.
cheers Rick

turning your rod on its side puts more pressure on the fish because it changes the angle on the rod to the meatier butt of your rod.  I was at a seminar from a G-Loomis rep a few years back and that's what they were saying.  There's also been several articles written in magazines about this very topic, (STS to name one).  One other benefit of changing your rod angle is that pressure is coming from different angles on the fish and it has a harder time resting.  For example, if someone was running around you trying to tip you over, you'd have to push back from all sides.  If they just stood on one side and pushed on you, you could just lean back on that one side and use fewer muscles to fight the resistance.

One more thing.  IMO, that fish was snagged.  And a word of advice; if you think you are in an area where you can't safely land the fish, don't fish there.  For example, why do people fish from the edge of a rock 20' over the water?

tight lines.

silly video...all it demonstrates is the lengths and stupidity in which some people would go through for the sake of landing a fish...running on wet rocks...wading waist deep in fast water...hanging over tree limbs...what did it get them? ??? sweet fu@k all.

on top of that, the older rods (in the video) encouraged the younger guy to keep going... Sorry, not impressed. :P

that isn't the ultimate steelhead fight. I had the ultimate steelie fight today while using the fly rod the fish i hooked was huge and when i set the hook it decided it was time to re enter the fraser river from keith wilson.  but he changed his mind when he got 50 yards. it then decide to go to the hatchery but it didn't make it because mr fishy decided to wrap itself around a snag. we all know what happened next yes he is still wrapped around that log with a hook in its mouth. he is probably thinking i am a stupid fish. that fish almost had me going swimming for me fish cause i am hungry but mabye next time. i am sad know :'(

Fly fisher, I think "What" means, its not easy to read your posts with the run on sentence instead of using proper punctation and spell check.
i am not good with punctuation
